is there a better word to use, other than snot? Especially when talking to children. Muccus sounds too medical, but "snot" is just awful!

Yup as kids we had to say "Candle Wax"
I can only offer the Scottish alternative of "snochery".
Aren't "Bogies" OK?
Actually maybe with Dick and Dom around..that may be a little rude. Although I'm sure I always used the term bogey/bogie as a child.

Dripping!

Crusties?
I would say snochers wi the "ch" as in "loch." To me a bogie/bogey is what ma brother used to make using old pram wheels....

Grolly's
We call them "crows"
We say runny nose. When it's 'set' we call them kernals!
farmers daughter (ryming slang for snotter)
How does daughter rhyme with snotter ?

The word snot comes from the olde english word gesnot' meaning mucus.

Other than snot or mucus you can also say phlegm, but I think snot or bogey are both okay for children.

Nottingham was once called Snottingham.  It was founded by a gentleman called Snot.  I imagine his family were quite happy with the name.
