Can you wash the things in a dishwasher that you have on top of a hob, ie the metal rung things that keep your saucepans level over the gas flame?

yes, you can. i always put them in the top compartment of dishwasher.

I would not if you are talking about cast iron bits on the hob

Always think that these bits need more "physical attention" ie elbow grease to clean them properly.

Yes you can, and they'll be subjected to hotter water than you could handle by hand-washing them. This'll help clean them better.
