Someone who makes only negative, critical comments about people (or situations) even though there are many obvious, positive and happy comments that could easily be made about that same person (or situation); and does so with the intention of affirming their perceived elevated social status.

supercilious - type that into "thesaurus .com " and take your pick.
Brutal, surly, ungratious, *********, resentful? One OED definition of such a person is a 'churl', and such a person would be described as 'churlish'.
Oh, for goodness' sake! The AutoMod has picked up on this word again! This is not a derogatory term for black people - it isn't even spelt the same. I wouldn't dream of using such an insult. The word I typed describes a grudging, penny-pinching or mean person, and has a quite different origin. Teach the AutoMod etymology! (On second thoughts, it would probably come out knowing a lot about insects...).
snooty,too.
How about censorious, disapproving, disparaging or even just plain cynical...

Thank you for all the above answers; which I have spent some time reflecting on.

The one that suits my needs the most is:

Churl

So an extra "Thank you" goes to Clare.

I thought 'churl' could also mean someone of low birth? 'My idea of 'misanthrope' doesn't really fit as that's someone who just doesn't like the rest of the human race, never mind the social status of the misanthrope.  'Supercilious' is more correct but of course isn't as convenient to say.  I have to bow to superior thinkers -don't want people to think I'm being churlish!
