Can Council sell off small piece of land which residents have used for 30 years?

Can anyone advise me please on whether the local council can sell off a small piece of land which residents have used to park on for more than 30 years. I am wondering whether the residents can claim prescriptive rights or have some kind of right of use over the land.

Did the Council know you were using it?
Is it enclosed by a fence?
Can you prove you have had uncontested sole use of it for more than 7 years? (which is already answered in your OP).
If allresidents have been doing is parking on it, then 'no'.

In answer to NazNomad, council apparently told residents some years ago that it was OK to park on the land but we don't have any evidence of this. The land is not enclosed by a fence - it is open land marked as 4 parking spaces in a residential close of houses which were originally built as police houses (now privately owned). The original houses do not have drives, so it is pretty obvious that the land was planned as parking for the houses. There is another small piece of land which they are also selling which is effectively grass verge which residents have planted up and maintained because council claimed some time ago that they did not own it.
you can only claim prescriptive rights if the area has been fenced off for your.(an individual) exclusive rights for 7+ years, not if it has been commonly used as......
