I would appreciate the option to be able to delete or edit a posting that I made earlier, even if there was a minimal time limit (e.g 5 mins) for this to be available.

There's so many times when I add a posting only to realise after it's appeared in the thread that either I wish I hadn't posted it or that I've made a stupid mistake in what I wrote (e.g. spelling).

Obviously I should only be able to do this to my own postings.

Your best plan would be to add a spellchecker to your toolbar and use it to avoid spelling or typing errors being posted and to give yourself a 10 second delay before pressing the submit button to check what you have written and self-edit.
It will never happen. Some people would post obscenities or threats then edit the post at the last minute.
Do as I often do.

Use 'Notepad' to type 'off-line' and then paste your edited version into AB.

don't get p*ssed and forget to use your spell checker as a previous poster often does
Come on No,Knowledge, Is spelling and grammar all that important between us friends in AB? I often make mistakes; although I do try to be correct. It's my punctuation which is suspect. What say you now.?........Ron

Actually I nearly always get my spelling right first time (apart from an occasional typo). I only used that as an example to save having to think of specific instances of when editing would be desirable. Perhaps a better example is when a more succinct way of expressing one's thoughts comes to mind just after clicking on Submit!
Lots have same problems -rueing their missives. We can apologise, take a battering or encourage others to report us to get the missive removed & a trip to the dungeon.

Spelling is not important - doesn't prove intelligence! only to mini-minds - so who cares?
Hence the reason for my suggesting that you compose and edit 'off-line'

I only hope that my comments are constructive and are of some help to you......Ron

Editing/deleting postings is commonplace on other websites and their message boards don't collapse into anarchy as a result, it's simply accepted as a standard feature.

Since it's included in so many sites then I would have thought that it's no great shakes, re programming, to be included here; it would enhance the AB experience.

And that is what I thought AB Suggestions was about - suggestions for improving the site so that, for example, the 'need' for using other software such as Notepad is obviated.
This isn't exactly a message board .It's a Q& A site .That's why it's called AnswerBANK .The questions and answers are all there for the duration so that it's a bit like a reference library . So somebody Googling for information on a particular thing may come across AB and get good (or bad) advice from real people on a whole variety of things. That's why nothing (only some abusive stuff ) gets deleted. I'm sure the odd spelling mistake isn't going to break the bank .Nobodys perfect .

Are you sorry then, that you talked down to that poor girl, just because she missed out an apostrophe when asking for help with her little ones homework ?

Im sure the Editor will certainly take your suggestions on board He reads all the suggestions avidly each day and gives out a prize for the best one .

Surely a message board is where one person posts, then some time later another posting is added by someone else or the same person, a bit later there's another post, and so on, which is what happens here at AB.

Isn't the only alternative to this a chat room where all the participants in the exchange are connected at the same time and can add entries simultaneously, the order in which they are added to the display being decided by the host software? It all happens in realtime.

Is there a third way?

p.s. my original posting on that other thread was only intended as a joke, something to provide a bit of levity. I didn't realise that she had had a sense of humour bypass and so I decided to respond to her comment; there are times when being equally rude seems the right thing to do.

Oh, and this would have been the perfect opportunity to be able to edit the posting that I made a few minutes ago.
