'Have I got news' is a satirical show, where a certain amount of banter goes back and forward, across the two panels with the chairman in the middle.

So was this just a joke? I think one would be pretty narrow minded to think otherwise. One matter it does highlight however, is the fact that should our politicians be allowed to appear on this type of show?

It will make it into a pretty boring show if they have to be constantly on their guard just in case they say anything that might cause offence.

I think the clue is in:

The Metropolitan Police have received a complaint from George Hargreaves, the leader of the small, evangelical political party The Christian Party whose members believe that homosexuality is a sin.
Offs. It is a comedy show where guests make jokes and off the cuff quips about the things we are thinking.

And funnily enough though gb, the governmenrt and the rest of us haven't too much to laugh about at the moment the fact that EVEN MPs have a sence of humour isn't new.

Look at that pillock who was on big brother pretending to be a cat!

If they are going to be on these sort of shows they should be able to be reasonably funny and not have to worry about stupi people takig offence at jokes. MPs or not funny is funny.
Of course it was a joke from an openly homosexual Tory MP, Alan Duncan, who has appeared on shows like this before and seems to like his "little jokes".

He was responding to a beautiful young lady's assertion that married couples should be "one of each", i.e. male+female. And Mr Duncan, who "married" his boyfriend last year, probably felt slightly miffed by her comments.

You know what they say? "If you can't take a joke......" And I'm sure that's all it was - no big deal.
Actually I don't think it was a joke.

Not in the sense of a light hearted remark intended for amusement.

He certainly wasn't smiling when he said it.

I think it was an ill chosen remark expressing his rather strong feelings.

Point is nobody in their right mind would think it a credible threat but it only takes one complaint from the lunatic religious fringe and the police have to investigate.

Thankfully it wasn't a muslim group or we'd be down the "damn muslims who do they think they are?" road again.
I watched the show - heard the remark, smiled, and thought no more about it.

The show is pre-recorded, and passed by the BBC legal department before transmission, so if they had thought it to be in any way controversial, they would have cut it.

The complainant appears to underline the well-known fact that ultra-conservative christians and homophobes have no sense of humour what so ever.
Omg what a waste of time.

But .............

yes it was a joke

no he shouldn't be investigated.

YES you are now scraping the barrel by bringing religion ( Muslim's ) into a thread about beauty queens and homosexuals.

Both of which Muslim's wouldn't permit, so i fail to see any connection except the usual scraping the bottom of the barrel on the news section , routine.

??? DID THE HELP ???

Stuff like that is regularly said on Have I Got News For You. If you like at similar shows like Mock the Week people are much more offensive...

I'm not sure anyone would be making anything of this if he wasn't an MP.
Did you read the thread Legend?

Religion is relevant because it was a Christian group that made the complaint.

Maybe I'm wrong but I suspect that had it been a Muslim group and not a Christian one, you would not have had to read down to the 16th paragraph to discover the fact.

I have had a sneaking feeling that it would have been right there in the headline.

Or am I wrong?
Problem wasn't so much the joke...but the fact that it was completely unfunny.

A politician in his position should know better. Either be scabarous and funny, or stick to the Today show.

And when will papers stop using the phrase 'openly gay'. If you know someone is gay, then it's obvious that they're 'openly' gay.
Ah yes sp but the term "openly gay" has a great feel to it doesn't it?

It almost sounds like "brazenly gay" - I think that's what they want to write really!
another non story
Question Author
It would seem that judging by sp's post, Gays don't have a sense of humour also.

Oh! and true to form, he also wants another set of words to be banned ('openly gay')

Mr Duncan, 51, is one of the few openly-gay MPs in Parliament

This is what the paper said, how else could they have reported it? Since there are many who are gay, but would rather it not be openly disclosed.

Now let's get this right, so we won't offend anyone in the future.is it OK to say the words 'coming out' or even 'a closeted Gay'
AOG

It's simply not a funny joke.

End of.

Did you laugh out loud at it?

No...

What would've been really funny, would have been if he'd said, "If she's not careful, she'll get a visit from the gay mafia...and that's really organised crimed. They gonna make her a coiffure she can't refuse"

That's wit. What he said wasn't witty or funny at all.
AOG

You're probably right with 'openly-gay'. Like the premier league, there are a freakishly high number of straight men in Parliament...lots of closet cases.
I did read it

but i still think this is another wasteful thread .

Btw this is for you .

Enjoy.

!?!?!?!? DID THAT HELP ?!?!?!?!
I confess I am irritated by these politicians who think they are funny. HIGNFY have a token one on every week and at best they are embarrassing. This was a classic case of the audience laughing at the man rather with him.

Lembit pik's another one that should be lined up against a wall and shot.
WHAT?? there are Bandits in the Tory Party? impossible, there must be some mistake, you sure he's not a Libdem?
Well , i've deliberated , Cogitated and Digested this story ; and here is my considered opinion on the matter

WHAT A STUNNER - and i dont mean the bloke !!

By the way some of the presenters should be lined up against the wall and shot as well ( no complaints to the AB ED please ) - case in point - the guy who hosted the show - whatever his name is - i could never understand why some peole find him funny - apparently
"Lembit pik's another one that should be lined up against a wall and shot. "

Gromit, I've just reported your threat to the police.
