The National Media Museum is a fascinating place to explore. Admission is free and the bus fare to Bradford shouldn't be too expensive:

Further to my previous post, why not simply explore the area by bus or (possibly better) by train?.

A ticket for a day's unlimited travel in West Yorkshire will only cost you 6 (or 5 if you limit your travels to either just using buses or just using trains). Even better, I can see nothing in the ticket rules which prevents you and your friend travelling on a family ticket. That would give you both unlimited travel (as long as you stayed together) for just 8.50 in total:

There's a rail map here. (The ticket is valid to all stations within the coloured zones):

If you were going to Bradford for the Media Museum, it might make sense to combine it with a trip to Halifax, to see the Piece Hall. (It's a beautiful historic building which has been preserved as a shopping centre populated by lots of quirky independent traders):

As Zacsmaster says, The Royal Armouries museum is free.
Leeds City Museum and Art Gallery on The Headrow is also free.
Almost next door in The City Lights is a Chinese restaurant called Maxi's where the food is superb. They do an all you can eat buffet. It's open from 5pm weekdays and costs 9.95 for adults but they do a student discount.
The Thackray Medical Museum (next to St James Hospital costs 4.90 for adults)
