In Land of Hope and Glory, Britain is said to be "Mother" of the free and a wish is expressed that God will make "Her" mightier yet, so 'motherland' would seem to be the choice.
I've always felt that Fatherland depicts male qualities like strong, warlike, ready to defend itself, while Motherland puts emphasis on a place where you feel at home, comfortable and safe.
Maybe it tells you something about that particular nation.
