Does anyone know who first coined this phrase. I thought it was Charles 1st to Prince Rupert, Engliash Civil War but I cannot find any reference to it. Ta

The earliest recorded use of the phrase dates back to 1570 and was written by a man named Foxe. As Charles I was not born until 1600, it certainly predates him.
That was John Foxe in his Acts and Monuments, if you want to research it further.

The term was probably quoted by the first Bra designer.
