My boyfriend is wanting to get a Neopolitan Mastiff dog as this has always been his dream.I very much want to be supportive of him but I would like some advice as to what these dogs are like as a pet.He presently has a Great Dane and Old English Mastiff so I am used to big, drooly dogs!(they are very old and wants to get a Neopolitan when his have died).Does anyone have one?If so what is their temperament? Are they similiar to Mastiffs?Do they malt much?I struggle to keep the house clean already with 2 dogs so I expect 1 dog can only be easier?! Thanks in anticipation

Probably pretty much the same as Boo's information but here's another site anyway

Definitely not the breed for you if you struggle to keep the house clean now! Great care must be taken in choosing a responsible breeder who has done all the health checks, and only bred from stock with a steady temperament.

Skin needs a lot of work, as they are very prone to sores if it is not kept clean and dry, including their ears, and washing their faces after feeding. Hips and elbows need to be scored and training is a must. They can be very protective, and must not be allowed to become dominant.

Really a very specialist breed, and only those with the facilities for such a large breed and wanting one for the right reason should take one on.

Remember this has got to be a joint decision, why not visit a few breeders and see how you cope with their dogs.

Thank you folks, info very helpful. My partner is definately doing his research into responsible breeders etc. He has been in touch with a few breeders and hoping to take me to see one of the dogs and see what they are like.
Neapolitans grow very big, my mate has two (mother and son), the male is 3 years old and weighs 18 stone.

They need to be well trained as they can be aggressive/protective, and you don't want to face a p*!$ed off neapolitan, believe me, I know.

They can also be destructive, they have ripped off the back door, the fridge door and pulled cupboards off the walls, just to get food, even though they have plenty.
