I'm not sure anyone can help me with this, but years ago (in the 70's) I read a scifi book about a group of scientists that created a miniture universe they kept confined in a building. As the universe grew, they were able to transport themselves (mentally) into a "person" on one of the planets to study their cultural growth etc.

Obviously, time lines were much different, a year in a matter of moments in our world, so they were able to "study" the birth and potential death of their created universe.

SPOILER: As it turns out, in order to keep the little universe from expanding into ours, they kept it contained with some sort of energy barrier. One (or two) of the scientists that were "visiting" the universe realized that if the universe didn't expand they would all die. So, they started preaching that they could actually "blast past" the barrier.

They built ships (and long story trying to get shorter) were actually able to bust through into our universe. Once they did the ships grew to be equivilent to our own enviroment.

Wow... I remembered more than I thought I would, since I read this book back in the 70's! I really liked the book and would like to read it again, but for the life of me I can't remember the title or author... HELP!!

OK Irish, apparently it is
David Grinnell's EDGE OF TIME,
(half of an old Ace Double.) "Grinnell" was actually a pseudonym for Donald A. Wollheim.
