i sent a letter on wednesday which hasn't got to its destination as yet, it had a first class stamp on it, the 12 stamp pack were from a few months ago, seeing as how the price has gone up i think, would it still be valid.

Yes, all stamps bought before an increase in price are still valid.

i am annoyed as it is an important letter, and if it doesn't get there what could i do.
Question Author
thanks Danny..
Get a proof of post every time! You can request one it doesn't matter what you are sending.
You could complain to Royal Mail but it wouldn't do much good.
apparently one in four first class letters are late arrivals, i'd keep all your fingers crossed . . .

Question Author
its a cheque for someone, i sent it first class so should have got there by now,
I posted a letter at 10am yesterday, too late noticed the sign on the postbox stated 'last collection 9am'. Very frustrating.

If it doesn't arrive all you can do is send another, if that's possible. If you had proof of posting you can claim compensation from the post office after 10 working days - so that is at least a fortnight. The compensation is 6 1st class stamps but that doesn't solve the problem of the letter not arriving

Joe, i didn't go to the post office, so no proof of posting, i just stuck a first class stamp on it, expecting it to be there by thursday.
If payment is urgent can you contact the recipient, offer to pay by bank transfer and cancel the cheque?
Question Author
i can't seem to do bank transfers from my account Barry, i have tried before.

Yes I appreciate that, but any compensatory claims or complaints, thats the first thing they will ask.
Question Author
its not that urgent, just that it should have got there by at least today, but no word. Its a gift for someone.
Question Author
i am not after compo or complaining Joe.. just can't understand why a first class letter doesn't get there next day.
Sorry to state the obvious, but if it was that important why didnt you send it special delivery?
Royal Mail doesn't consider a first class letter missing until 10 working days after posting. It's not at all unusual for them to reach their destination a few days late.

It is also not unusual for recipients of gifts to fail to thank the sender or let them know the gift has arrived.

My post doesn't arrive until 2pm at the earliest. Maybe your recipient has the same postman :)
Not many people use cheques now, most people want bank transfers, the last person who did work on our roof wanted/preferred a bank transfer, you should be able to do that from your bank, I didn't know until he told me how to do it, if you have difficulty the bank should explain in detail to you.
Wow spooky, just been looking up the price of a first class stamp, come on here and see the heading 'first class stamps'! Have you noticed how only main posting boxes now seem to have a second collection and most are only in the mornings?
Has the recipient told you that she/he hasn't received it yet?
Also as Barry says they can be ( and often are) late, i wouldn't worry just yet.
