One is Irish, the other Scottish, both claim to the original. Does anyone know - and is there any difference between the two?

They are both the same style just preferred spelling depending if Irish or Scottish - imo

I know Aran is a group of islands in Ireland and Arran is a Scottish island but one of them must be the original creator of that style of jumper.
I've been to Arran many times and have never seen them claim the sweater as their own, in fact several of the shops on the island stock the Irish Aran to sell to those who have the two confused.
can't find a definitive answer by googling but i was shown an arran gents sweater for £99!
ael, Mr Rockrose Aran sweater cost me 134 euro 7 years ago!!
strewth, hopefully it hasn't shrunk in the wash
Lol no but I wear it now as he decided to tell me after wearing it less than 6 times - he actually doesn't like it!!

£99 is cheap for a hand knitted, pure wool heavy weight jumper. They take hours to knit.
Question Author
Rockrose, does it still fit now you've lost all that weight?
think i'll take up knitting, it might keep me out of trouble ...

I took up knitting for a while when I stopped smoking. I was rubbish but it did keep my hands occupied, and I did knit a very long scarf, Dr Who styleeeee :)
I certainly couldn't follow a pattern or do fancy stitching
that's the reason I can now wear it - honestly he wore it once a year - and I was cold in November and thought I would try it on - it fitted so I claimed it!
Found this on Google:-
//The Aran Sweater takes its name from the set of islands where it originated many generations ago, off the West coast of Ireland.//

So it seems to be the Irish version that is original.

Thanks all :)
