They are all different. Find the area you are interested in, click 'tool's then 'view historical imagery'. That will tell you when the latest photo was taken and also let you look at older images.
Most images on google are between 1 - 3 years old. You can use Follow Your World - Home to find out when new imagery will be available for your location.

Google Maps uses the same imagery used in Google Earth. To find any satellite images "capture date" in Google Maps you need to install the Google Earth application on your PC and zoom into the area where you wish to know when it was taken. The date that will be shown at the bottom of the screen is the Imagery Date.
I use google maps satellite view all the time. the date is shown clearly in a box top left in street view and can vary by up to 4 years even between streets. I've never downloaded google earth nor anything else.
My house/road isn't on it yet, and I have lived in it since it was built 9 years ago!

My ex-wife, can be seen through her kitchen window in her Close, very clearly!
