Exploding jug

Doing the washing up this morning and just as I went to put a Pyrex jug down on the draining board there was an almighty bang and the jug exploded in my hands. Glass shot everywhere in a 5ft radius. Got some cuts on my hands and thing 1 got some cuts on the top of her feet. The glass took chunks out paintwork, due to the sheer force of when it exploded. Frightened the crap out of me. I have told Pyrex and they want the glass back to send to France for testing and I have emailed the supermarket to let them know (just in case they have got a dodgy batch of jugs). The jug has only ever been used for measuring rabbit food and was only two months old. Should I tell anyone else as I would hate for anyone to get really hurt by glass flying everywhere (can't actually believe that no one was badly cut this morning). PS - don't want a new jug from Pyrex as I wouldn't trust it!

That`s really dangerous. It could have taken your eye out. Personally I wouldn`t tell anyone else because if Pyrex find that it`s a faulty batch or whatever, they`ll do a recall.

Gosh, how odd! Frightened the crap out of me though, the bang was really loud and I just stood there for a bit trying to work out what had happened.
I would be inclined to take it further sher. How long is going to take for Pyrex to do the testing? They may not recall the jugs. What if a young Mother with a Babe in arms had experienced the same thing. To be on the safe side I may be tempted to contact this government website

Doh, I got suckered, I saw the first line and thought it said ''Exploding Jugs''.
Coincidence?? the link doesn't mention exploding containers, just superheated liquids.
so no connection whatsoever to this scenario then? funny it seemed very similar

Thanks Mazie, I will have a look at that. Could have been really nasty, I was so shocked that I didn't even realise I was bleeding at first.
I think you were both lucky sher. Nasty stuff that shattered Pyrex
I have had a Pyrex plate shatter in the microwave. It was a very old plate, but it was probably the first time it had ever been used in a microwave. It shattered probably because a tiny amount of air had been trapped in the glass in the manufacturing process, and when the air bubble expanded, it had nowhere to go. My plate was coloured, so nobody could ever have seen the airbubble. Maybe your jug had a similar defect, but you don't say if it was transparent, or if had been heated.
I had a similar incident with an exploding Glass sink in a hotel in Geneva.
Arrived at hotel, run the tap for a minute , started to come through hot and put plug in (plunger type thing) walked back into main room to grab wash bag from case and heard an explosion in the bathroom ! What the hell was that and as I looked in sink had exploded into thousands on bits. I then had to go back into the room and grab the thing they put on the bed at the bottom and chuck on the broken glass on floor and put shoes on , then walk into bathroom over broken glass to turn tap off. Water was poring onto floor.
So I had been in room for less than 1 hour and it looked a wreck lol
Called reception and tried to explain to someone in broken French and English what had happened. They sent up a porter and he said in broken English , they get it on a regular basis !!!!!! Moved me to another room and that was the end of that.
Would have complained more , but life is too short I figured.

Atlanta - it was a clear jug and hadn't been heated apart from being washed up in hand-hot water.

Just frightened me to think of how much damage could have been done.
Sorry about my flippant remark earlier sherrardk, very dangerous stuff exploding glass, could have been nasty.
Question Author
No probs Tony, I probably would have read it the same.
My OH has recently bought a Pyrex jug, I will treat it with great caution. Nasty shock sherrardk.
whats thing 1?
Don't know why it happened, but Pyrex is well know for shattering, I have had it happen to dishes, plates etc, and quite a mess to clean up. Good luck with complaint
Thing 1 is one of the twins.

Thing 1 is one of my four year old twins (there is boy #1, boy #2, girl and thing 1 and thing 2 - I have found it is the easiet way to refer to them on here, obviously they are not called that at home).
