He was selected to represent his school in a chess competition which took place today. The school has a fairly rough catchment and he has had a pretty hard time over the last few years as he is a clever lad and that's frowned upon by the high percentage of moron's that he shares a classroom with.

Anyway he hasn't had much practice and the school chess club has only been running for a few months but he still managed to come in the top 10 (not sure exactly where yet but not in the top 3 as they all got a trophy) out of 140 kids from across 2 council areas. One school sent 10 kids and they play every day after school!! He won 3 and drew 2 matches so was unbeaten over the day.

.......and he chose to go there and miss his "golden time" reward.

.......then he followed up by getting a clean bill of health at the dentist and a compliment for great brushing!!

Just been for a wee McDs as a reward :o)

Awww, what a lovely story. You should rightly be proud of him.
Good for him - he sounds like a right little trooper. xxx
Lovely, well done him annie. Chess is a great thing for kids, teaches them strategy, self control and logical thought, excellent thing for him to be doing. you're rightly proud:)

thanks Mrs O - he is bouncing at the moment! coming up for 12 about to start high school away from the morons and coming out his shell at last as he can be himself without getting grief for it.
Excellent - no wonder you are proud :)
Question Author
thanks sher - yeah he is, he's becoming really funny and bubbly - 3 weeks left of primary school and his new high school beckons.

thanks NOX, he is a clever boy, he told me he didn't even cheat!!! there was however a bit of cheating going on at some of the tables but the opponents didn't notice!
Very very good you are right to be a proud mom annie.
It's an achievement being able to play chess let alone win games. Little cheque in the wee mate's birthday card?
Question Author
thanks dave - to be fair I am proud of both my boys every day :o) they have their moments but are good kids who work hard and respect other people, that's pretty much everything in my book.

wharton - he was wanting me to buy him a plot of land for his birthday - he has designed his house/business building already (he and his friend are apparently opening a computer/gaming design place) his idea is for a tall block resembling a pc tower done in black glass with a penthouse on the top with a slide out balcony that looks like a dvd drive coming out front of the building. quite impressive but maybe not this year!!!!
thtas a great result annie0000 i used to play a lot of chess and i was in the school chess club [many years ago]...lol and me and a couple of mates got some stick for it off the local knuckleheads but we enjoyed it as im sure your son does..and he has done very, very well please pass on my congratulations to him...chess is a thinking persons game hopefully he will get a chance to shine at the high school...its such a shame when kids are picked on because they are clever...well done to him...
i might have played chess but i cant spell ''thats''...lol....

All this from a boy who got to the point of being tested for aspergers because of the anxious behaviour he had developed at school because of bullying...
Question Author
lol stoke - the high school he is going to is one of the top 5 council schools in Scotland in terms of academic achievement - I hope he'll do very well there with other kids that want to learn instead of have a carry on all day.
He is doing really well annie, all thinks considered.
Question Author
I can't play at all - think I am too old to learn now, all i know is the horsey guy moves in an L shape!!
sounds like a real good un...
You have a great boy there annie, and clever, chess is a game of concentration and skill, I wouldn't have the nerve to play competitively. You have every right to feel proud of him. Hope he enjoyed his reward.
Question Author
thanks tony - they decided not to fully test him for aspergers cos although he had some traits they felt any test at best would show him as borderline. He also only really showed the traits at school where he was very anxious. As he was coping fine otherwise we all said we'd leave it rather than give him a label with no purpose.

a pawn can become a queen (I'll bet the boy knows that)
