Theft from luggage at airport

I was led to believe all baggage areas after check in had cctv ? Ive been to spain and when i arrived my dress was missing out of my case ... nothing else taken just a dress which i packed last so itd be on the top of other clothes, when i got home from holidays i checked i hadnt left it here so some thief has been in my case and taken it , why just a dress i ask ? no daft answers about x dressers please : )

what have the airline said?
are you absolutely sure you packed the dress?
Have you called your hotel in Spain to check it wasnt left there?

When i arrived at the hotel i unpacked and the dress was missing , i know for sure i packed it red, i double checked my wardrobe when i got home and its nowhere in the house , id only wore it once as well : /
not worth persuing my insurance for it either , more hassle than what its worth

My daughter accused a spanish airline of stealing her camera from her suitcase. 2 years later I found it tucked in a snowboot just before I threw the boots away! She was mortified.

I always use a padlock and a strap, it's not foolproof but it helps.

Went to New York & Florida 2009. We used the officially recognised combination padlocks which can be opened by officials with a special key for security checks . Everything ok on journey outwards however return journey marred by seeing case zips where lock was attached forced open with pliers or similar & a brand new wrist watch in a presentation case stolen.

Although there is cctv, there are blind spots and you can bet the baggage handlers know where those are. It could have been done arrival though.

My father was a flight engineer so I was brought up with the airlines and the fact that theft from baggage has always happened. It happens everywhere and it was always accepted there was little that could be done. My father still has contact with the industry and theft continues today.

Some baggage handlers spend much of their shift working their way through cases looking for easy pickings. The airline that had the worst name for years was British Airways. Their baggage handlers operate virtually as a closed-shop and they all know each other or are related to each other. Even if someone was caught and sacked the other handlers just threatened to walk out so the airline backed down and left the person stay - or even took them back after being sacked!

Suitcase locks are very basic and can be opened by anyone who knows what to do. Suitcases with zips can be opened by inserting a ballpoint pen into the zip then the zip can be closed again with no sign of interference. If a case was especially tempting but hard to open the case was just cut or broken, then made to disappear as 'lost'.

The golden rule that we always used when travelling regularly was to never pack any item in a suitcase that couldn't be easily replaced or wouldn't be too much of a disaster to lose. If you value something then carry it with you as hand baggage or bear in mind that it might take someone's eye in the baggage area.

Your story is no surprise at all Ladybird. It's what happens. Someone took a fancy to your dress. I'll bet there were no signs the case had been opened either were there?
