Try prune juice. My son suffered really badly with constipation. He actually used to bleed, and very quickly became afraid to do a number two.The prune juice worked pretty quickly, but the problem was getting him to drink it.
mix the prune juice into the weetabix and then top it with yogurt. He will love it as prune juice is very sweet to taste.

Heinz do a Baby Prune Juice - but be very careful when giving babies neat 'adult' prune juice - it should be watered down. Giving them too much, can obviously have an adverse effect, giving them real bad tummy pains & then the runs.

To be on the safe side, it might be best to contact your local pharmacy first.

Is he drinking enough liquids during the day?
I would suggest more liquids. Try a little pure orange juice diluted with water.
childhood constipation is much more of an issue than people think. i recently heard of a child so constipated that it vomitted faeces. prune juice and general roughage is always good, but if he is struggling to pass stools try putting a very small (like an oxo) piece of simple soap up his bum, it does help after 10 min.

I agree my son is 8 months he had trouble going to the toilet, so I diluted pure orange juice with cooled boiled water every other day only a little ounce, it used to clear him out.
Apparently, in the 'olden' days, Mums used to place a tiny bit of soap just inside the botty - sounds awful, but if it worked.......!

Actimel do a yoghort with prunes at the bottom (sorry!) of the pot and its just a right amount to get things going. Also make sure the baby is having plenty of water

A good vindaloo should get him moving...
give him a bottle of water to drink ... cool boiled .. sounds like he's dehydrated ..
One more vote for a sliver of soap up the popschi - unpleasant but it makes them do a smelly in 5 to 20 minutes
