Well just an update again..........SIL went into hospital today but just as they where going to take him down to operate they "noticed he was yellow" , don;t doctors talk to each other? anyway they decided to do another scan and found one stone has now moved down into his bile duct so they decided to send him home. He is due in again on tuesday for them to take the stone out of the duct and they may remove his gallbladder at the same time or not and he will have another appointment to go in again. They did explain that if they had removed his stone today it could have turned for the worst and burst the stiches giving him blood poisonning. ? just thought you would like to know what is going on. getting closer to wedding now and we are all holding our breath.!!

blimey! wasn't the whole reason he was bumped up because he was yellow??
Colour blind Doctors, can you believe it. I bet the stress isn`t helping.
I thought that operations for gallstones had been overtaken by that method of fracturing them by some external energy source. Is there a particular reason why an operation is being used?
Odd, very odd.

Thanks for the update.
lithotripsy is normally used for kidney stones, I think that is what you are thinking of Scotman
sometimes an endoscopic method can be used to extract a single gallstone that is causing a blocked bile duct but as this carries a risk of triggering an attack of pancreatitis it isn't used that often but it sounds like they might consider it here as it would hopefully get the stone that's causing the biggest problem out of the way without the need for a big op they can then do a non urgent laparoscopic cholecystectomy once your SIL is better

they might consider putting an external drain bypassing the obstruction for a few days first.. that would allow some of the jaundice to fade. you don't heal so well when you are very yellow...
rowan, are you referring to an ERCP ?

Good morning everyone. Yes sqad I think the whole thing is strange.! The hospital knew he was jaundice and his wee and poo had got worse. His Gp phoned up and told them that is why they phoned him to go in yesterday. Then they realise he is yellow.!!!!!!!! anyway rowan, yes that sounds like what he was saying. They are going to just take the blockage out on tuesday and then he has to go back and have the gallbladder out another time. BUT if when they get in there they may decide to do it all at once.! Your guess is as good as mine to what the next installment is going to be.! lol Have a nice weekend everyone. x
