<<<All those people out there who are being horrid to animals must be delighted that so much time and resources are being targeted at this woman, and taking the pressure off them a bit.>>>>

No diversion of time or resources, they are now being focused and the fight against cruelty to animals, continues.
That illustrates my point, Geezer.

The public homes in on one pet target (pardon the pun) ...

... and all the others are suddenly out of the spotlight.
Chuck ALL cats in a big skip, et volia, no more abused ***!
I am pleasantly surprised!

I have banged on many times about the vast number of ludicrously self-righteous posts that can accompany a subject like this - emotive as it is.

As regulars will know - it becomes a 'pi**ing contest' with the usual suspects trying to outdo each other in just how morally outraged they are, and the try and come up with ever more inventive and horrible punishments until they foam at the mouth and fall over ...

but this time? None of that.

Just some reasonable points that although this action was callous and cruel, the woman in question was mentally ill and needed, and needs, treatment and support.

I think the legal punishment was commensurate with the offence - the vigilante mob attitude is as usual out of control, but not on here, which is wonderful.
I think the pikey drowning puppies happened in Norway or some scandanavian country. that's why its not turned out to be huge news here.

This woman has been publicly reprimanded and villified on a massive scale. In my opinion it not proportionate to the crime. Clearly slightly unhinged.

we shall take that as a pat on the back Andy! how did we ever manage a sensible discussion!? Perhaps it was my "Keel Hauling" suggestion in the original post!

Indeed RI - I thought that was very clever!

I know i have been accused of being sanctimonious in the past - I do hope I didn't come over that way with my post - if i did, then sincere apologies - it's the occasional fate of communication in print.

I was genuinely pleased that people have seen through the media hype and the knee-jerk reactions it always causes, and understood that there is usually more to a media story than meets the eye - especially the way the papers pander to people's sense of moral outrage.

Next week - 'Maggie's funeral - let's all pay £10 in a voluntary collection to make sure she gets a really good send-off!'

And yes - I am kidding!!!!!

Far be it from me to question the diagnosis of a Psychiatrist, but we see more and more criminals being diagnosed with a Psychiatric disorder to justify their crimes.
I for one question this and of course we are not privy to the Psychiatric Assessment.

Let´s make this simple...I have clinical depression, I have lost interest in my job, I might even have lost my job, I wake up at 3.am in the morning and can´t get back to sleep. My appetite is poor, I feel that life is not worth living, so I feel that when I walk down the street to work, my medical condition enables me to, or urges me, to pick up a cat and stuff it in a bin.

OK OK that is what the "experts" have said.

I am not an expert, I have a modicum of common sense.....but that?.....I don´t buy.

I think it's about time this incident was put to rest. She has been named, shamed and fined. End of......

There are worse crimes committed in this world - far far worse.
Agree Sqad...

Noth...she didn't know the cat would come to no harm..
Sqad - first of all my sincere symnpathy for your situation - I too suffer from clinical depression and have been hospitalised, and am on medication, so I do know exactly how you feel.

I can see that you feel that your illness does not mitigate cruelty because you feel that it is not an action you would commit.

I understand that too - even though i was hospitalised for three months, my illness only directed my cruelty inwards, and on the occasion it manifested itself outwardly, it was in the form of verbal cruelty towards my nearest and dearest - a pain i will carry for the rest of my life.

However, our condition affects us in different ways, and as you rightly point out, no-one can second-guess the circumstances in this case - or any other.

I do take your point that you would not behave this way as a result of your feelings, and i entirely concur - but others are affected differently, and while illness does not ever excuse cruetly, it can explain it, and we as a society should use or compassion first and our anger second, in working out the best ways of dealing with instances like this.

Was this woman's behaviour excused by her illness - no. Was it perhaps explained? Ithink so.

Sorry doc, you've lost me ....
andy.....what are you talking about? I have NEVER been depressed in my life....p1ssed off yes.....but never depressed.

I should have made it clear that my description was NOT of me, but of a hypothetical case.

My mistake, although the tone of my post remains.
// a week after this incident there was a report of a pikey drowning puppies, that story seems to have died a death. //

I think the difference is that is wasn't filmed.

Mental illness causes you to do strange things sqad. It's difficult to understand why she'd do such a bizarre thing if she was thinking clearly.
Noth....I don't want an argument either :-/
