She has been charged with causing unnecessary suffering to the animal.

Mary Bale, 45, has also been charged with failing to provide the cat with a suitable environment, contrary to the 2006 Animal Welfare Act,
so do we all have to go around providing cats with a suitable environment, then?
she's an idiot and wouldn't understand what that meant.
Seems totally unnecessary but the 'environment' offence is contrary to Section 9(1) of that act. That provides that someone who has responsibility for the animal has a duty to provide for its needs and 'needs' include providing it with a suitable environment. So the argument runs that she had taken responsibility for the cat, and a wheelie bin is not a suitable environment. All ripe for legal argument by the defence and serving no purpose. She's guilty of the other matters charged, on the evidence disclosed, and without any legal argument arising.
I am an animal lover and what she did was cruel, but she has been punished greatly for this offence.

Having said that - it is not as if they will be short of witnesses.
well when the story first broke people wanted her punished a lot more severely
"So the argument runs that she had taken responsibility for the cat, and a wheelie bin is not a suitable environment."

Really? Try telling that to the cats round our way.
you mean she can no longer be put in the stocks, cazzz? Well, no wonder this country is going downhill.
I was shocked to see she kept her job and avoided prison....disgusting..
"She'd taken responsibility for the cat" - what, by shoving it in a bin, what sort of responsibility is that?

I saw a cat putting a woman in a bin on youtube

This will be anothr big waste of money tho, won't it?
She will plead not guilty, and get away with it.

A lot of us never complained about Top Cat .. Did we?

Cruelty to a domestic animal and a fine .. etc may have sounded a lot better.
I locked my cat in my wardrobe once - for his safety.
It would have to be proved that she caused suffering to the cat. The cats owners were not providing it with a suitable environment as it was roaming freely near a busy road it could be argued that she was preventing it from being run over by putting it in a safe place. A strange thing to do though, she could have just taken it home.
Bill Roache's family accidentally cooked their cat. It was back in the day when folk used to have an oven by the side of the fire. The poor puss got in the oven for the warmth. They didn't know the cat was in the oven and lit the fire.

Poor thing. What a horrible way to die. [:o(

I'd like to see that evil woman who put the cat in the bin go to prison.
A wheelie bin is not so bad when you look at it's merits ..
Warm, dry, shelter .. and food.
My friend has just had a sucessfully fledged Robin family move out of hers.
Albags, it's fine as long as your binmen don't just seize the bin and chuck the contents straight in the crusher, like ours do...
That's awful Mrs C - surely the oven door was still open..... How terrible you would feel, I can't imagine it.
