At last someone from the younger generation has finally admitted that the last two generations have wrecked Britain.

Now 'us old ones' can sit back with a smug expression on our faces, and say "there I told you so, Britain was much better in our time".

If that is what one calls 'instant gratification' then yes, it sure was when I read this.

(sigh) i thought the article was about the economical wreckage not homicide (yee hah y'all)?

what is your generation aog..... ?
what's 'wrong' - that Mrs Clegg isn't of your generation? Given that a generation is about 30 years, I think Clegg's reference to his parents' generation would include anyone born after about 1930. If that doesn't include you, you're entitled to consider yourself exempt from his criticism, though there won't be many in a position to agree with you.

/// Why do your statistics stop in 1997 - when the Labour Government came in?

Could it be because it doesn't suit your argument? ///

I bet you thought you were damn right clever, sorry to disappoint you.

I obtained my statistics from this paper (no not the Daily Mail) but,

http://www.parliament...rch/rp99/rp99-111.pdf
the murder rate hit a 20-year low last year

http://www.independen...year-low-1748627.html

so Jake's suggestion that things got better under Labour seems to be accurate, though of course it doesn't show up in the 20th-century report you cited.
Yes

which says:

· The rate of homicides peaked in the mid-1990s.

Go on.....

"there I told you so, Britain was much better in our time".

Oh I do enjoy typing those words, and it is becoming more obvious with each post how they upset so many people.

Signs off with the smug expression still on his face.

"If that is what one calls 'instant gratification' then yes, it sure was when I read this. "

God, what a nice well-balanced person you must be.

If you're representative of your generation, then frankly I'm very glad I belong to the iGeneration.
Looking at those homicide stats, don't forget the population increased as well, they are not highter indicences in the name core-numbered population.
boxy are they not per million ?
well spotted zzxxee, stats-radar need adjustment....

The figures are skewed because they only take account of England and Wales. If they took Northern Ireland into the equation, the figures would show a definite 'bulge' at the times of the troubles...and that was a legacy from the generation above mine...ie yours AOG.
Anyway - the focus shouldn't be so narrow.

The chances of anyone on AB being murdered is extremely small (1 in 19,000 according to http://www.splung.com...ent/sid/1/page/logs).

There are many factors that need to be taken into account when assessing the quality of one's life, but "Am I likely to be murdered" should appear way, way, way down the list.
