Why is it when Muslims are burning western countries flags' there is not a peep from the western world but when someone in the Western world threatens to burn a copy of the Koran (which like it or not is just a book) all hell breaks loose from the Muslim world.

The burning of any other religion's holy book probably wouldn’t have even got into the mainstream news. So why does the burning of the Koran by a group of nobodies get into almost every news outlet in the world and warrant a quote from the the US Attorney General, who said that the idea is "idiotic and dangerous"? Why should such a silly stunt be 'dangerous'?...

noami - "Yes, the pastor is an imbecile, but not for the reason you claim"

like...
I've already explained that.
can't see it anywhere, oh well nevermind.
What's the poor Korean done anyway?

Oh....hang on...
Ankou - “What rot. if it was a group of muslims in north London burning the bible there would be no end of aog threads. probably an article in the daily mail as well.”

I both agree and disagree with your statement.

I agree that if a group of no-mark Muslims decided to burn Bibles in north London then I would bet that the Daily Mail would condemn it and AOG would post a question about it. But from here we start to disagree.

We're not talking about one or two reactionary newspapers or one individual poster on a semi-obscure website (sorry AB editor). This story has got Governments throughout the world rattled. We have the US Attorney General commenting on it; we even now have President Obama himself condemning the proposed action.

You have to ask the question - why is the president of the USA becoming embroiled in a religious stunt?

The answer has already been given – Islam and its adherents have a history of opposing any sort of perceived criticism of their religion by using violence or the threat of violence in order to prove that Islam is truly a religion of peace.
well he has decided to put the burning on hold now, and a large part if me suspects that this is down to his own government advising of the error of his ways than any "foreign bully".

and burning a book isn't 'criticism'.
I beg to differ. Burning a book is criticism. What else is it? By burning a symbol of the thing you disapprove of you are demonstrating your criticism of that thing.

That is precisely why American flags are routinely burned in many Middle Eastern countries and why we've seen burning effigies of Bush and Blair over the previous years. It is criticism – nothing more and nothing less.
The burning of books is a mediaeval symbolism, latterly revived in Germany by the Nazis. Don't forget that when the first translations of the Bible in English appeared they were ceremoniously burnt by the Roman Catholic church.
^^^ Precisely my point. It is a demonstration of disapproval.
Weren't a lot of copies of Rushtie's 'Satanic Verses' burnt a few years back?
Beunchico - you'd better not try that with the koran; we'd miss you !
look what happened when women burnt they,re bras one of them ended up being prime minister,
can you imagine a muslim prime minister ? kin ell
got shot though didnt she ? unlike maggie who killed us lol
it was the location of the mosque at ground zero he was disapproving of wasn't it ?

burning the book would be an affront.
I cannot source this quote; I think it might have been Queen Elizabeth I, although I am more than happy to be proved wrong, who said, " I would rather burn books than burn men".
