Yes absolutely heart wrenching, but if you are expecting some others to feel the same, you'll have a long wait.

There will be postings regarding more fishermen get killed, or they knew what was expected of them when they joined up, more got killed in WW2 etc etc.

Very sad.

My other half is in the army so perhaps this story got to me more than it would someone else.

GingerNinjaMan, the letter was to her son, not for someone else to find. But It was the lovely letter back from the cleanup workers that tugged at my heartstrings.

As an ex squaddie I can certainly empathise with this lady - sounds like it helps with her grieving process - a lovely, poignant gesture by her - hope the healing process of time helps her, although, quite naturally, she'll never be able to get over her loss.
Sad story..
it's an odd way to pay tribute to a son, kind of casting his fate to the winds, but rather lovely.. and I'm glad it turned out well. (But I'm not sure you can say it 'wasn't for someone else to find'... messages in bottles are either going to be found by somebody or nobody, and I'm sure she knew this.)

I suppose I've disappointed aog, but there it is.
Very moving story, what a lovely gesture by the workers to write their own letter of tribute. None of us agree with war or want war, that goes without saying, but this is a Mum's message to a lovely young man, and as someone with a son-in-law in the army, who has done 2 tours in Afghanistan, I can see why she did it.
It's a great story, sure. I don't think she ever thought the message would get to her son through (not being funny, but there is no coast in Afghanistan, and currents are all wrong) so it's a bit like tying a message to a balloon, it releases it from the sender. I can understand why she did it.
a very heartfelt story xx
