Clearing mines in Afganistan??

In 1944 we had 'Flail Tanks' to clear mines off the beaches for the invasion.

My question is: Why cannot these be used in Afganistan??

I may be thick, but I would have thought, this would be better than our troops today being blown apart.

Mcmouse - are you saying that rather than blowing up a few ramshakled houses we are risking our service personnel? Amazing I'd have thought they would have wanted them blowing up. Maybe the 'hearts and minds' policy should only be applied in relation to the re-building of the houses
I liked the way that US surge dealt with the land mines. They fired some sort of rocket horizontal to the ground to clear a whole area of ground the troops could proceed on.
