I see from the headlines that Catherine Zeta Jones has been awarded a CBE, and Vicki Michelle (I vill say zis only wernce) an MBE. The Help for Heroes founders have also been recognised - good. Brian Cox fans will be pleased that he has an OBE, and three Corrie people recognised too.

Here's the info from the BBC website:

Unbelievable boxy !!
Apart from the fact I cant stand that smug CZJ with the mid Atlantic accent I wonder where the charities she supports are based since she's based in America.
Vikki Michell ?????????????

Even although I think they should be scrapped I had to smile at the Irishman who was awarded MBE for services to ploughing and the station announcer who was also awarded the MBE -quite quirky lol !!
The latest list of Queen's honours smacks of our last Prime Minister but one! Don't get why Vicki Michelle has got one ... Brian Cox yes, maybe, he's a wonderful actor and also the Help for Heroes founders are well deserved recipients. We wrote to whoever it was many years ago, requesting something for my MIL - she had been working in a voluntary capacity for Marriage Guidance (now "Relate") for many years - but absolutely nothing! The whole system is very strange .... agree with Dris, it should be scrapped, or at least completely overhauled. Next thing we know, all the Big Brother contestants will be getting one. I think my OH should get one, for services to me while I've been recovering from a broken ankle!

:-) at chokkie's OH - and yes, helping others should be the priority. (PS I think you might be confusing Brian Cox, this one is the physicist who presented the space programme on TV recently, works with CERN etc. - not an actor?).
At least the Help for Heroes people have one which I think is right, the massive support they've raised and their high profile took the then Government by surprise, yes we DO support our troops, it sounds this morning as if changes might be afoot with the new Chief of Staff being appointed. But hey, what do we know? - we all know people who have served their communities selflessly for years, who never get a look in with these awards. Showbiz and sports people are, after all, only doing their paid jobs, nothing exceptional (although I would make exceptions for Olympic Gold Medals of course!). I just think the whole thing is far too Like the Eurovision Song Contest these days.
Vicki Michelle's award has nothing to do with her acting. It was given "for charitable services". She's an active patron of the 'Hopes and Dreams' and 'The Dream Factory' charities, both of which work with seriously ill children. She's also a patron of the Haven House Hospice for children, as well as of several theatre groups for children

CZT was given her CBE "for services to the Film Industry and to Charity". She gives active support to the NSPCC, the Worldwide Orphans Foundation, the Global Missing Children's Network, Swansea's Longfields Day Centre (for adults with cerebral palsy and their carers), Cinema for Peace and the Motion Picture & Television Fund Foundation.

Did I see a dairyman collecting an award for milking cows.
If there was a dairy farmer in the list, AYG, it was probably Angus McCall. He's been Chairman of the Scottish Tenant Farmers Association since it was founded, and he was given his MBE "for services to Tenant Farming in Scotland".
Chris -not to be obtuse but in the main they 'lend' their names to the charities in order to give the said charities a 'profile'.
You dont honestly think that Zeta Jones (et al) actually spends hands on ,getting your hands dirty time aiding the charities other than attending anything but Charity Balls ?
Cynic moi -never ;)
point of order boxtops, Vickie Michelle was the barmaid "aaaaaaawwwwww Reeeennneee!". "I'l say zis only wheence" was Kirsten Cooke.
