But surely its not needed if they earn this sort of income, family allowance always used to be for helping towards the children school meals uniform etc, this benefit should imo be means tested if its not needed it shouldnt automatically be paid.

I've always wondered why people have children and then pay someone else to look after them while they go to work. It doesn't make sense to me.

redhelen - Yes I agree but just think its about time society in general should consider whether they can afford children and whether they are prepared to forego some of lifes luxuries to enable them to look after them as a priority. These days they want it all and its not even shown thta children are benefitting from this attitude.
With our lax rules on immigration maybe the people that have benefitted from coming here see extra benefits in having large families.

I am with you on this one too.

Just because people CAN have children does not in any way mean that they SHOULD.
I cannot believe the complete madness on this post... You are making a direct attack at me, and millions of decent families like me. We have worked hard all our lives. We worked hard at school/college/university to secure a working future. I work for a charity and give a great deal to society. My husband is in social work. We pay for our own home and we must run two cars as we live rurally and work in opposite directions. We chose to have one child, because that is all we can afford. We have nothing left at the end of the month once we have paid our bills, taxes and childcare. Yet YOU think we can 'do without' this assistance?! Let me tell you that child tax credits are there to ENCOURAGE PEOPLE to WORK! They are ONLY paid IF you both work.

Perhaps I should have chosen to be unemployed, in a housing association house? I could then claim unemployment, council tax have my rent (and all maintenance payments) paid for, and have the 'luxury' of staying at home, with as many children as I felt like popping out, as I would be able to claim a hefty allowance?! I'd CERTAINLY be better off! But I want to set a good example to my daughter.

This Government is encouraging a more lazy society and the majority of us (the so called 'middle class' have to pay - EVERY TIME. What incentive is there for me to work now?

I don't go out to work for fun. I work because I have to. We do NOT live an extravagent life - far from it. And this latest ridiculous cut will put us under severe financial strain.

Before you start spouting forth broadsheet propaganda - get your facts straight
