Crimen Sollicitationis was enforced for 20 years by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger before he became the Pope.

It instructs bishops on how to deal with allegations of child abuse against priests and has been seen by few outsiders.

Critics say the document has been used to evade prosecution for sex crimes.

Crimen Sollicitationis was written in 1962 in Latin and given to Catholic bishops worldwide who are ordered to keep it locked away in the church safe.

It instructs them how to deal with priests who solicit sex from the confessional. It also deals with "any obscene external act ... with youths of either sex."

It imposes an oath of secrecy on the child victim, the priest dealing with the allegation and any witnesses.

Breaking that oath means excommunication from the Catholic Church.

I'm not going to defend the actions of the Catholic Church over the abuse allegations, but, of all the criticisms of the Pope his membership of the Hitler Jugend shouldn't be amongst them, I don't think he had much choice in that matter.
Question Author
well he would say that.
wouldnt he?
I've never heard him talk about it, I have read about that era quite extensively and there was a degree of compulsion in such matters, especially at the end. There was a film called "The Bridge" made in the 1950s about it (I havent seen it) the first part of your question is pertinent, the rest I view as irrelevant and nonsencical.
Question Author
Its my opinion.
Your opinion is that its nonsensical.
But as you aren't an expert then you have no greater authority than me.
Unlike you i wont resort to cheap digs and insults.
This is a serious subject and i think you really should be ashamed.
Don't make a mockery of the subject or of my opinions , because i haven't mocked you or yours.
Manners cost nothing but are obviously not consider worthy of use by some here.
Thank you.
Everton's right. This from Wikipedia:

Following his 14th birthday in 1941, Ratzinger was conscripted into the Hitler Youth, per German law at the time but was an unenthusiastic member and refused to attend meetings (His father was a bitter enemy of Nazism, believing it conflicted with the Catholic faith. In 1941, one of Ratzinger's cousins, a 14-year-old boy with Down syndrome, was taken away by the Nazi regime and killed during the Aktion T4 campaign of Nazi eugenics.

There are many things to reproach Benedict for but accusing him of being a Nazi when he was a kid just distracts attention from the really important ones, the things he did as an adult.

Wikidpedia isnt a conclusive refrerence source. Im sure you know that already though? I have my opinion and theres no excuse for ignorant digs from users.
well, what are you disagreeing with in Wikipedia? You think he wasn't 14 when he joined? You think it wasn't required by law? These can be verified easily enough. I'm quite happy to accept that I'll never know whether he was 'enthusiastic' or not - but do you know better?
There's nothing ignorant about "my dig" the fact is that membership of many aspects of the NSDAP was not an option, of all the things the Pope can be criticised for his membership of the Hitler Jugend isn't one of them.
Question Author
Not from wikidpedia but refers to his books which im sure are still available .

Ratzinger joined the Nazi Youth in 1941 at the age of 14. Although it's been widely reported that he was forced to join, in his book, Memoires, he doesn't mention being forced or of any resistance at all. In his autobiography, Salt of the Earth (1997), he wrote that his older brother Georg was obliged to join, but that he later registered himself in it. His brother Georg however, told The Times of London recently, that their "father was a bitter enemy of the Nazis". With the exception of listening to foreign news radio, his family did not make any passive resistance, as many other German families had in his area, by not enlisting their children in the Nazi Youth, or hiding fugitives from the Nazis.

Family Anti-Nazi
ratzinger had an grand-uncle Georg Ratzinger, who was a Catholic priest and also a member of the Reichstag (parliament), wrote many anti-Semitic pamphlets. Some critics have also pointed out that there were many Catholic families in his town that resisted, and that his father, who had been a policeman, would have been very much aware. In his second autobiography Milestones: Memoirs, 1927-77 (1998), he writes that his father was very vocal in public against the Nazis. In his earlier book though Salt of the Earth, he seems to contradict this, stating that his father "made no public opposition" to the Nazis, and further that it "wouldn't have been possible".

Regarding Pedophile Priests

As Prefect of the Doctrine of Faith, Ratzinger was responsible for investigating the cases of priest sexual abuse. He has often been criticised with trying to cover up the allegations. In Dec 2002, Ratzinger told a news conference that he believes the American media were exagerating the abuse reports, stating that "less than one percent of priests are guilty of acts of this type."

According to an article in the British Observer, Ratzinger wrote a letter dated 18 May 2001, to every Catholic bishop, informing them of the church's policy towards priest sexual abuse. In the letter he gave strict orders to the bishops that any priest sexual abuse case they received, were to be handled internally, and that any evidence which could incriminate a priest with the local ordinances, are to be kept confidential for up to 10 years. The letter adds that in the case of a pedophile act, the 10 years doesn't begin until after the victim reaches 18. The letter concludes with a reminder than any breach of this order could result in penalties, including possible excommunication.
Question Author
Does conscripted mean joined voluntarily ? As he has stated in his book he joined voluntarily?
Just one point but its a well known fact that wikidpedia cant be taken as gospel.
Surely you know that?
I'm not concerned about what his father did.

I am concerned about what he's done. I just think your question is a lot more forceful if you don't muddy the waters with unprovable claims about what happened when he was a teenager in a dictatorship.
x ray

why are you so touchy?

none of the posts here are 'cheap digs and insults'.

They have agreed with your condemnation over child abuse over ups but think your nazi accusations are 'irrelevant and nonsensical' and therefore a distraction from the serious stuff.

So count to 10 and ease up on the hissy fits. They just turn what could be an interesting exchange of views into a silly squabble.
sorry, didn't see your last post. If the law says you have to join and you join, that's not necessarily 'conscription' (depends how you define it) but it's still the law.
Question Author
In Dec 2002, Ratzinger told a news conference that he believes the American media were exagerating the abuse reports, stating that "less than one percent of priests are guilty of acts of this type."

But then later.
In response to the widening scandal, Pope John Paul II declared in 2003 that "there is no place in the priesthood and religious life for those who would harm the young".With the approval of the Vatican, the hierarchy of the church in the United States instituted reforms to prevent future abuse including requiring background checks for Church employees and volunteers and, noting the preponderance of adolescent males (teenage boys) amongst victims of abuse, warned that a more searching inquiry is necessary for a homosexually oriented man; and the worldwide Church also prohibited the ordination of men with "deep-seated homosexual tendencies".

So he basically blames homosexuals and not paedophiles? Nice eh?
Question Author
Zeuhl everton was being a pompous ass. Jno did you miss the bot where ratzinger said in his book that he joined voluntarily?
Or did you skip that bit?
Going on what hes said and done the man has a track record for covering up paedophilia and protecting paedophile priests. Sorry if calling him a nazi offends you.
But he has ordered the coverup of paedophilia and for that he should resign.
Question Author
zeuhl theres no personal attacks here from me except towards the pope. i dont feel the needto try and demean posters to score points. i do however believe what i say to be true. If you felt the same i would expect you to defend your beliefs and not change them merely to fit in.
interesting x ray ...

please enlighten us with which part precisely of everton's first two posts were pompous?

and which parts precisely of everton's first two posts were 'mocking the subject or your opinions'?

I don't know why you think anyone would be offended by the accusation that the pope was a nazi.

Posters have just queried its validity or relevance compared with the seriousness of the undoubted abuse cover ups.
sorry x ray

just to clarify ... my last post isn't a response to your last post (if you know what i mean)
x ray

i think your case re pope/abuse cover up is well made.

i just don't think the old chestnut of nazi-youth does anything but muddy the water.
