Quite rightly Hitler and the Nazis get a lot of critisism about how they treated the Jews in World War 2, but what about how Russia have treated the Jews in the past.

I watched a repeat of Coast today on BBC2 about how Lithuanian Jews were driven out of the country in Victorian times by their treatment by Russia. I also saw an epsiode of "Who do you think you are" once which also talked about the treatment of the Jews by Russia.

It seems the treatment of Jews by Russia in history is almost forgotten.

Why did the Russians treat the Jews so badly?

Come to that, why have the Jews been treated so badly all over Europe (I remember Mahler, the composor and conductor, suffered from anti Jewish treatment during his life).

Anti-semitism was rife throughout the world, neither the Russians or the Germans were unusual in this regard.
Francine Christophe wrote about central european Jews as having suffered centuries of discrimination ("so were just Jews") they spoke Yiddish (she didn't) so they didn't view her as Jewish, a diferention she points that the even Hitler himself failed to make.
History teaches us that a people without a country are ripe for victimisation, if you go back to the 19th century you'll see the abuse of the Greeks, the Armenians and the Assyrians, the state of empires tends also to conspire to abuse it's subjects as the executive and the legislature is also the oppressor and as a consequence validates and excuses itself.
Such abuses transcend religious boundaries and tend more to revolve around the more subtle racial overtones, the Roma gypsies are a case in point (even today) and the third Balkan war (technically still being waged) is another.
Bit of a long open ended question but try the page below Media URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisemitism
Description:
VHG....you are very brave to bring this subject up, as I did, for discussion about a week ago......personal vendettas came into play and the thread was deleted.

It is an interesting question and I wish you good luck with the replies that I failed to elicit after being called a moron, ignorant and a pr1ck.

Good luck.
That's because you asked it in ChatterBank Sqad....
ummmm....I wouldn't have thought that it would make any difference, but you are right. It will be interesting to see if this is "pulled"
the difference being that no one here has said "I am anti-Semitic", whereas you did, Sqad. and the thread is still there, it's just that one post of yours that was removed.

many people might have been offended by such a comment.
Hopefully it won't....

I'm interested to read any answers. I know quite a few people who hate Jews. I don't know why.
http://www.theanswerb...s/Question840730.html

it's not the question that was unacceptable.
sara...is there no end to this vendetta.

I wanted to develop my argument as to what I meant by antiSemitism but did not get the chance, because the important post was reported and removed.
sara...let us call an end to this topic which seems to be going around in circles between you and me.

A question........do you consider the question of AntiSemitism a topic worthy of discussion? Yes or No?
you made your opinions heard when you clarified that the "hatred of Jews" link was your opinion.

it's not a vendetta.. grow up. who's still harping on about it today? it's you with your pouty lip sticking out. mind you don't trip over it.
I don't get it....

Why can't Sqad have his opinion? And agree to disagree...!!
what if I were black and he said he hated all blacks.. it's unacceptable. why is it okay to post that he hates an entire religious group, as your friends also do? shouldn't people be judged as just people?

he can have his opinion, but it doesn't mean it is acceptable to announce them to the world.

shall we have a KKK member give their views? I do hope not.
Actually, if there is a member of the KKK around, I'd be interested in reading his views - and I hope we would all be given the opportunity to denounce them. As I said on the other thread, you might be able to stop people who disagree with you talking, but you can't stop them thinking their own thoughts. The only way to defeat views you oppose is to challenge them in rational debate. You'll never change someone's mind simply by gagging them.
When we first came to England my Dad hated blacks. Each one he met individually though, he liked.

(he never really hated blacks....he'd just never seen a black person until we moved here)
ummmm - howsabout I throw into casual conversation that I hate the Irish ?
I'm not quite sure you would be so even-handed about that.................!

(btw I don't actually hate the Irish but I'm sure you get my point :o) )
England drove the Jews out for centuries too. (Cromwell let them back in.) Many countries discriminated against Jews; so there's probably no point in picking out any one of them. The difference with Germany was a wholesale programme of genocide, which is a whole lot different from just exiling them.
I've had plenty of that over the years....

He didn't announce it Jack....He was just ignorant and I think they scared him a bit.

I probably would be as even handed.....on this site anyway. To my face would be a different matter but most people wouldn't give their opinions face to face.
well I confess that, with hindsight, perhaps I shouldn't have reported Sqad's post, but I was shocked and offended at that time. I'd like everyone to know his views but the more I see of them, the more I think people are seeing what Sqad is all about.

I'm up for healthy discussions but I am a bit shocked by some narrow minded attitudes. and I think holding such hatred is probably bad for ones health ;o)
Tis probably true Sara....that is why I rarely think about people/things I don't like.
