Language - subpoena is the American equivalent of a Uk summons, or the other way around, depending where you are.
Andy is essentially correct, however summons and subpoenas are both used in the US.  The summons is almost exclusively used for a person to appear before the bar, whereas a subpoena may mean for a person to appear, but more often used to require documentary evidence to be presented...
