There is something very wrong when camps are being set up and people with small children, are prepared to live in such squalor, to get to the UK, The Le gendarmre are flexing their muscles once again and clearing the camps, but just what are soft touch Britain doing about it?
These people deliberatley destroy their passports so they cannot be sent back, they claim they do not understand anything said to them, and when they do get in, illegally work to send money back to their country of origin, Why is Britain so soft on immigration? successive goverments have waffled on now for years, but actually done nothing at all

It's the same over here bobbi and it is disgraceful. Having said that - watching the news it's heart breaking seeing all the human distress -

yes it is peri, these people have to be desperate to do this, but we are so small with a Welfare State to encourage them, this is not why it was set up, that said, how many of our own are taking handouts for doing nothing, a double edged sword there I think!
They are desparate alright - desparate to become economic migrants.
The established rules of this game are that one presents oneself to the appropriate authorities at the first safe country in one's journey.
What's scandalous is the French have for years ignored the problem instead of picking these people up and processing themselves as either genuine asylum seekers in France or immigrants that need to be returned to the nearest country from whence they have nationality.
About time this was done.
I've said it till I'm blue in the face, all we have to do is enforce the current EU law, that's all the EU , problem solved.

I totally agree with you builders, and as for the 'eco warriors' that always seem to be present at these happening, send them with them, they don't look as if they have wahed or worked, ever!
France is sh!tting itself incase they have to take some in, it wouldn't surprise me if the actively encouraged them to head into the Euro Tunnels or climb aboard the many cross channel lorries, I am sick of our Ministers being so soft on this issue, while the ones that do get in, work illegally to prop up their own countries economy, ours meanwhile is collapsing under the weight of handing out benefits, proper asylum seekers go to the first country of safety in the European Union, so if they are pouring in from Iraq, Iran or Afghanistan, if my geography iserves me well, this would be....Greece or from the African countries,Spain....how the hell they think the UK is first stop????
I have just ansered myself..Benefits!!!!
Quite so, Geezer. And I’ve agreed with you on the same number of occasions.

I don’t often have sympathy for the French. However, I travel to Calais quite a lot and it is no longer a place where I would get out of my car and have a stroll round as I used to. The situation with the “sans papiers” is a disgrace and it is seriously affecting the town’s economy (which depends almost entirely on Brits coming from Dover to spend their cash). However, Les Gendarmes would not have had quite such a problem had it been tackled when the migrants first started assembling after the closure of Sangatte.

The problem is that these people usually get to France via a number of other “safe” countries, most of them in the EU. Each of these countries chooses to ignore the law, preferring instead to just let the migrants mill around as they make their way westwards. A woman on Radio 4 this morning from (I believe) “The Migrant Council” (whatever that might be) suggested that the hapless souls were desperate to pass through, say, Greece and Italy because conditions there were so appalling for refugees that they could not possibly stay. Quite what the people of Greece and Italy should think when it is suggested that conditions in their countries are worse than in a putrid insanitary shanty town I cannot think. Of course, she would not possibly consider that it was nothing to do with the conditions they have to endure, but more to do with the money and gifts that are bestowed upon them when they finally arrive in the UK.

Never mind. It will all be academic when the Lisbon Treaty is ratified and enacted. That will effectively create a single European State and the UK will be compelled to take its quota of asylum seekers, wherever they first land.
I'm afraid life is a lottery.

If you are born with parents who have no interest in you...........you struggle.
If you are born rich.............you very rarely have money worries.
If you are born poor.........you always have money worries.
If you are born in Afghanistan, Russia, West Bank , Israel, poorer countries of Africa...........that is too bad.

Legal immigrants with something to give to the host country, that is fine, but there are hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants ( almost all Muslims) who are just here for the benefits.

Being born is a gamble from the start.
How depressing - true but depressing none the less
Watching the fottage on TV it would seem that all the immigrants I saw were male from about the ages of 20 upwards. I could not see any women or children and I was avidly looking.
the british people are fast becoming the minoroty in our own land..we do not need or want any more migrants in our country...its about time we had detention camps set up and snatch squads on the streets and unless they could prove that they were here legally they shoiuld be detained and then booted out...draconian it may be but the govt are on about saving millions of pounds they should start with the migrant problem first..that would save them billions....
Are these the same immigrants that come to Britain with their great culture and do the jobs us lazy Brits don`t want to do or are they just coming over for the benefits?...Hmmm... tough one that
it is a tough 1 to call elvis, but lets not forget about the free health care, housing, education and everything else that they will qualify for and they have not even contributed to the system for years and years like most britons who already have..
Elvis has hit the nail on the head there, the media often talk about illegal immigrants (or more often, anyone who isn't English, whether legal, illegal or asylum seekers) "coming over here stealing our jobs" but they do the jobs that British people refuse to. There was an article in the paper some months back and the journalist was talking to businessmen who had lost their jobs and were finding it difficult to find any work. The journalist told them about strawberry picking jobs local to them that were, for the work they would be doing, paid quite well. The response from all of these men were that they would rather be unemployed, with attitudes like that it's no wonder people from other countries come here with the correct assumption that they will be able to make a living.
"Snatch sqad on the streets...." - that's a bit drastic isn't it? I thought he was over in Menorca or wherever on a legal basis?
Sorry - couldn't resist that one...

I think it'd disgusting. We should be more like the French - Britain is far too soft on immigration. I feel sorry for (most of) these people, but our country is at saturation point and enough is enough.
sophie........unless I am mistaken,Elvis's was a tongue in cheek reply.

It's not the number of immigrants that come in and work that is the problem, it is those that come in, disappear and don't work.
I wasn't sure if it was or not so I thought I'd take it non-tongue in cheek for my own purpose! But what about the vast number of British citizens who don't work? Surely they should be treated harshly as well as a crack down on immigration? I probably have quite an idealistic view of what should be done as I think that as a rich nation we should be helping those in poorer countries so they have the same quality of life as we do. As I said, very idealistic but it makes more sense to me than providing for immigrants on our own soil.
You are quite right Sqad,

sophie, do you honestly think these strawberry pickers are paid well and pay tax and NI?

Most of them live on site in custom built sheds and are paid pittance, the only people earning well out of this are the farmers

You should watch UK Border Force on TV to see how bad the problem really is

While I partially agree Sophie with the lazy inbreds here who will not take any job, bear in mind, the money the 'stawberry'pickers' type of job, they may take, does not go back into the British economy! yet it is bled dry from benefit handouts to them, they will readily say, the money they make, goes back to their host countries and as for our lazy louts! if they won't take the jobs, stop their benefits, I am at a loss about the softly, softly approach to this, like many of you, I have contributed all of my working life, you get nowt for nowt in this world, the NHS is straing under the pressure, I have friend who recently retired from laboratory work in a hospital, and the ammount spent on AHIV testing these imigrants, especially fron the African Continent...is staggering, who is paying the price Sophie???
We are!
ELVIS...."Border Force" certainly opened my eyes. The number that just appealed against the decision to extradite them back to their own country and then just disappeared into the UK
