There is a different rule for shotguns.

1968 Firearms Act

The Act did not require the registration of shotguns, only licensing.] Also, while applicants for firearms certificates had to show a good reason for possessing the weapon or ammunition, this did not apply to shotgun certification.
It also doesn't apply to jeuveniles - I think it's 3 years minimum there

i thought being altered to sawn off changed the status considerably , forgetting about the above story it is still rare that the 5 year mininum is applied ...
And your reason for stating that is what?
I thought you might have referred do data such as this showing that far from it being rare in fact the vast majority are.

You've not been believing what you read in the papers have you?

Doh!
Well if you will read the Telegraph!!!

Check out the actual data - I've compressed the URL

So for example in 2007 of adults receiving an immediate sentence for firearms offences 82% received the minimum.

I'm also rather touched by your faith in the deterrant effect - deterrance is useless if people don't think they will be caught.

The US has the ultimate deterrant for murder and a staggering murder rate.
Sorry to butt in here - but whenever I see a discussion about shotguns , it always brings to mind that episode in only fool and horses where Rodney meets girl in the market . He gets invited to her fathers country estate . They are out for a days shooting , and delboy turns up uninvited , packing a sawn off shotgun .
Classic

It is not the case that a shotgun is not classed as a "firearm" but that smoothbore firearms (such as shotguns) over a specified barrel length are treated differently within the legislation(s).
berty

it was a classic but it was not a sawn-off, it was a pump action

that would be even more frowned upon by the country set

mange tout!
My mistake.

Thanks for the correction , Dave .
