The Eco Migrant problem was due in the main to weak New Labour policies:

http://www.sustecweb.co.uk/past/sustec11-4/asylum.htm

Despite the evidence supporting the view that asylum seeking was driven in the main by new outbreaks of political instability and oppression, most national authorities in the European Union considered it was principally fuelled by economic considerations - the search for a better life in the prosperous West. With this in mind, they aimed for a reduction of 'pull' factors (a refugee reception system that guarantees minimum standards of accommodation and welfare, and eventual access to the labour market) as the best way to tackle so-called abuse of the system.

However, it is important also to acknowledge the fact that this approach has gone hand-in-hand with greater consideration being given to the human rights dimension to asylum procedures. The legislation of the 1990s, whilst subjecting asylum seekers to less humane treatment on initial reception, was simultaneously responsible for extending appeal rights against adverse decisions, and in October 2000, formally incorporating the standard to the European Convention on Human Rights into asylum procedures.

There are many factors as to why the U.K. is incapable of stemming the follow of Eco Migrants posing as Asylum seekers. IMO this policy of spreading fear amongst the population via you must have a National ID Card and the country will be safer holds no water for me. We all loose and those in power gain more power. Open your eyes folks, the UK is fast becoming a fascist police state with armed police on all our city streets already. What does that tell you?

Surely part of the purpose of the EEC was to *enable* economic migration anyway?

LO Jim, i curious as to you choice of words, where did you school at?

A full dissertation would take several hundred pages on the subject of Eco Migrants, far beyond the scope of 2000 words allowed on this forum.

As for the business of Police State Britain:

You need to get out more often. We are a soft touch for Eco migrants but hammering down on UK citizens civil rights is not the solution. If strong policing means a total disregard for the rights of UK citizens, I am against it.

Saint Nick,  I will back you when you become a contender for Mr T Blair's job!  I don't think you are barmy at all.  I think you are a very intelligent, reasoning individual and we need more like you.
Agree with you again Saint Nick.  Its probably the small minded little Britainers who are so incensed about what they read in the Daily Mail about what a soft touch we are for illegal immigrants and how much benefit fraud is going on who believe that an ID card is a one-stop solution for illegal immigrants/benefit fraud/street crime/ terrorists.  How exactly?  People say Ive nothing to hide, so why should I mind my details being held on a national database? but we should mind; its a slippery slope.  We have no control over how our information might be used either now or, more worryingly, in future by a successive, more malign government. Theyll be wanting to microchip us next.

ok i'll try to be a little nicer.

we don't have an asylum or imigration problem. such issues are stired up by lazy journalists to feed of the base fears of misinformed people. for what its worth, my view is that imigration is healthy and contributes greatly to our social and economic wellbeing. its ok to quote news stories and various reports but the raw statistics indicate we need more imigration at most skill levels. ID cards do not equal police state. lazy politicians introduce rubbish like id cards because they appeals to the people who have been frightened by the press who also happen to be the core voters who get them elected. ID cards are a bad idea because they will eventually be misused by some body in the future, but that is not why they are being introduced. We are seriously no where near being a police state. The police do not control the government. Periodically they get a chance to pressure the gov't but they are subject to the same ebs and flows in their persuasive ability as any other pressure group.

sorry for being rude in my last post. no harm intended.

Hi Jim,

The Eco migrant problem is actually far from under control. I asked an MP at a masonic lodge cancer charity fundraising recently why our health service has deteriorated to the point of huge waiting list and very poor after care. He told me this was due the the huge influx of illegals migrants putting a heavy burden on the system. The London borough as I understand it cannot cope, so these people were moved elsewhere in the country.

I spent some time in hospital for cancer treatments after my operation and saw the very poor state our NHS actually is. This was reflected by both the doctors and in particular the nurses.

Australia has a far better control on the immmigrant issue then the U.K.. We should train our own citizens in the skills require and not import them from overseas? This makes sense to me.

For the record, I was a member of HM Security Forces serving in Ulster and overseas having seen all the sunny hotspots of the 70s. But I believe our government has sold us down the road with very failed policies and lied  to the population over WMD. I am not alone here, many of my comrades still in the service feel our PM was not truthful. If you cant trust the PM, can you trust the new laws he is trying to shove down our throats?

The police is a means for him to acheive this as they will enforce all this new legialation.

my girlfriend is a nurse in an onchology (spelling?) ward and is mortified at how people view the NHS as they work very hard to help people. I'm not sure i agree with your MP friend, another big burden on the NHS is the aging population which is partly due to the sucess of modern medicine.

I  agree we should train british citizens as well, but i am fed up with people blaming imigrants for our problems when the facts dont back this up.  I agree about Blair and WMD, in fact we could have saved 3 billion pounds by not getting involved in Iraq and spent that on the hospitals. I hope you're recovering well saint nick.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your kind words. IMO there was a lot more at stake then just WMD in Iraq. I have no problems with putting down tyrants or mass murderers such as Sadam Hussein. But the PM convince the country that his war was a just one on the basis of making the world a safer place. Who could argue with the notion of a safer world for our children. What I find not acceptable is that he mislead us all.

We find ourselves now in the situation of "reprisals" by militant Islamic groups and fair game for "dirty bombs" etc. What a legacy for our children?

Now his puppet, Mr Blunkett comes up with a quick fix schemes and very restrictive legislations telling us all, it for your own good and the safety of Britain?

On a final note, I agree with you that immigration is not the only reason why the country is in such a mess. Wars after all have to be paid for and the taxpayer always pays. I am surprised they have not imp[osed a WAR TAX on all UK citizens.

The election box is the only way, we can make our disdain felt in London by those who govern us.
