The Express claims Brown is ready to go into the EURO. Should we go in now? What effect will it have on Labour? Ie will it help or hinder their election chances? What effect will it have economically? Is it inievitable that we'll end up joining anyway?

Where do they get this from?

Sounds like a straw man to me

Pretend your political opponant is about to do something unpopular and shout him down.

There are good reasons for and against joining but they never get aired, it's usually just ill thought out patriotic rants or stuff about changing money on holiday

The red tops have made it politically unacceptable and I don't see that that's changed
OK I see - idle speculation on French Radio

I don't think I'll be nipping down to Ladbrookes to bet the Farm that we'll be joining up any time soon!

I wonder if the Express' editor would like to back up his story with a small wager?

Must be great being a journalist and never having to take responsibility for when your stories turn out to be rot.
We'll all be murdered in our beds. The Euro ? We're Doomed. I've got News for you -it's Only money. You'll still be British.

Ok jake care to indulge us, what are the reasons for and against that never get discussed?
No, its not only money, it is your whole economy surrendered. Ask the Germans.

I suspect that this is what will happen. Mandy afterall is a big advocate. Surprised at Brown the Dictator though I would have thought he would want to keep control.

R1, what effect will it have, well after Bottlers scorched earth policy it may well be preferable now. Lets saddle Europe with our 1trillion problem !
Browns popularity has been slowly creeping up since the financial crisis doing something like this which is Universally recognised as unpopular would be insane.

Tantamount to political suicide.

The main argument against which is a good one is the pooling of economic controls. But European economies are more in sync and this hasn't produced the doom and failure predicted by some at first.

I keep hearing about the dreadful Irish experience but mostly from everybody in England - not from any of my Irish in-laws.

Thing is everytime there's some Vox-pop on TV people seem to go on about "they're not getting rid of the Pound" and "it's the Queen's head" and lots of emotional stuff like that.

Oh there's also a load of "The shops would put up prices like they did when we went decimal".

I guess it would actually be odd if they stopped someone in the street and they said "You have to consider money supply" (Probably be edited out if it did happen).

But it's all irrelevent anyway - it's a battle from 10 years ago
While it was still the Government's long-term ambition to take Britain into the Euro, now was not the right time.

Peter Mandelson

Brown and his cronies are waiting till the pound is de-valued further against the Euro (which won't be long) then we will lose the Pound.
The Little Englanders can't get it into their minds that the is finished as a trading currency. How long will it be before 1 euro equals 1. All this talk about making our exports better. Firstly you have to have things that other countries wish to buy and in the past this was our motor cars but no longer. We should have joined when we had the chance as now we are on a downward slope to oblivion.
