Following the arrests of the mayor and the senior councillors an ex-pat is now mayor of a Spanish town.

But what I find shocking is that he can speak only 'broken Spanish' after living in Spain for 25 years.

The Spanish government provides free language classes for immigrants - there really is no excuse.

You're probably right there, jno.

That's one of the reasons I sold my place in Spain - too much corruption and red tape

Oh the land grab thing. Lots of people have suffered with that.

Bulgaria winters are worse than ours, thank you very much, so I'll stay put.

in winter you let your retreat out to skiers. I have a friend who does this; he says it's gone ok so far, but that's only been one year. Nonetheless, I can understand if you prefer to stay in Twistleton-upon-Fiennes.
