...because without her, we would not have "state" at all, the cold war would still be going on, the wall would be up and we'd be soviet outpost waiting in line for a loaf. discuss!

Must be true it was on the front page of the mail on Sunday!
Yes! well there you go.

The Express is quoting the Mail as the source too.

Sounds to me like a certain newspaper thinks that if they present something as "happening" then maybe it will.

I don't think it's likely to happen.

We've already seen on this thread what a contraversial character she was and I don't think anyone will want to risk a state funeral that's broken up by demonstrators and riot police keeping them down.

It could all get quite ugly and very embaressing
Sorry Doc_Spock but if you think Winston Churchill was a blood soaked war-monger then you either don't know anything about history or else you're a closet Nazi and dream that we could, even now, be enjoying life under the jackboot!

I don't remember Mrs. Thatcher invading the Falklands, either - but you evidently don't think they were worth fighting for and think that we should have abandoned our citizens to the Argentinians!
It's just been discussed on the Daily Politics Show on BBC2, so it's not only the Daily Mail/Express that have reported it.

Mrs Thatcher did nothing extraordinary to warrant a state funeral. She became a megalomaniac. If she was as wonderful as some seem to think, one has to wonder why her own party got rid of her.
Daily Politics and other shows like it tend to pick stories up from the papers; it doesn't mean they're true. It may have originated from some civil servant who wants to judge the reaction of the public. Mine is that nobody as divisive as Maggie (or Blair) should have a state funeral; they should be reserved for someone who's mourned by maybe 80% of the population. Okay for the Queen Mum (though I wasn't in the 80%); not alright for any politician in recent times.
Welcome back Krom! We're going to have to agree to differ on this subject before we all lose thwe will to live!
As in another thread "Why are we so miserable"
So all the Thatcherites will be praising the virtues of Dennis next - the one who used Downing Street letterheads to further his business interests. And . . . .

lets not leave out darling son Mark - now there is a modern-day Thatcher. Such a nice boy.

And of course Carol - enough said.

Thanks Maggie - but no thanks.
The troops lining the route will be kept busy keeping the over enthusiastic at bay.
Ther person who gets a state funeral, does he/she survive accountability for what they did in this world?
"Over enthusiastic" yes that's one way of putting it.

Margaret Thacter's foreign policy was a bit of a dogs dinner.

She sent Carrington to Rhodesia/Zimababe to help negotiate the settlement that brought Mugabe to power.

Her withdrawal of right to British Citizenship from the Falkland Islands were what actually Gave Galtieri the idea that it was safe to invade in the first place.

She was a firm supporter of the South African apartheid regieme.

Her strong desire to "deny terrorists the oxygen of publicity" gave us the ridiculous spectacle of actors revoicing Gerry Adams on the news and meant that we need to wait for Tony Blair to get peace in Northern Ireland.

And for all the little Englanders out there she signed the Single European treaty that turned the EEC into the EU.

You can argue the toss about her economic policy but her foreign policy was pretty poor.
Give her a statue but absolutely not a state funeral.

No matter what you think about Thatcher, it's pretty much a fact that she split the country in two, and now is no time to open old wounds.

Can you imagine if you were one of those who viewed her as the architect of the destruction of your way of life...how you would feel to see her given this honour?

She is absolutely the most revered politician of recent times, and she's also absolutely the most hated.

There's no justification in p*ssing off half the country with this unneccessary honour.

'unneccessary'? 'unecessary'? 'uneccessary'?

Take your pick.
I bet she was a great speller though.
In the 1980's nearly all manufacturing in this country ceased.

The Tories would have been voted out of power in 1982 if they hadn't started a war.

They sold every nationlised industry - industries that had been paid for with public money, putting it in the hands of private investers, who put profit over any public good.

This also opened the door to foriegn investors to own this country.

They nearly brought the NHS to its knees.

Annualy they reduced the amount invested in education.

In smashing the miners she made everybody in this country pay and then destroyed the industry, by importing coal.

Lovely legacy - wonderful woman.

When did they release you from the Asylum(where do no doubt the disgusting Thatcher woman is too!)
everton: I have to say, our argument was probably some of the best fun I've had on AB.

I was originally going to respond to Dave's points but I really think I ought to keep my mouth shut.
Hangings too good for her!
State funeral ? i dont thinks , with all the harm this witch wreaked on this country, instead we should declare a day of national rejoicing.
Us Right Winger's On this thread Are for sure ,well & truely

out numbered By THICK LEFTIES.
fagidill, Most people here, left or right, simply see that Mrs Thatcher didn't do anything extraordinary. If she was booted out by her own party, that must tell you something, surely.
