If it is at all possible to "ban the hood", shouldn't there also be a call for the banning of the burka, especially since it was recently used to disguise a male in a recent shop robbery.

Not on this evidence alone, no. Here you have one example of where a burka has been used in a crime and, although there may be a few other such examples, countless other crimes have been committed by youths in hoodies. Its beyond me why jewellery shop that has a bell, presumably so that they can allow access to only those that they deem safe, would open the door to someone who was 6ft and covered from head to toe!
Y'know, stockings are often used in robberies. Shall we ban those, too?
I wish people would stop acting like banning any kind of garment is going to make a smidge of difference to anything. Criminals aren't going to give two hoots about the legality of their mask.
Banning hoods or burkas or anything is both anti-libertarian and there's no evidence whatsoever to suggest that either would have any effect on crime.
For that reason, both ideas are impractical, pointless, and not a little sensationalist.

Kromovaracum, whilst I agree that banning the burka is not the answer, I think comparing it to robbers wearing stocking on their head is too simplistic. If someone walked down the street waering a stocking over their head they would quite rightly draw stares however women wearing burkas is an everyday occurence.
At a Spanish airport yesterday I saw two women in full Muslim gear boarding a plane to Leeds/Bradford. They weren't subjected to any more stringent checks than anyone else. Had I been a fellow passenger, I'd have wanted them thoroughly searched - in every nook and cranny, in fact - before being allowed to board. I don't trust 'em an inch. So yes, ban the burka...and Islam altogether.

We're going to 'ban muslims' now?
Because there's a popular conception that all muslims are involved in terrorism somehow (which seems to be the implication of this thread). Can anyone give me any real, direct evidence to suggest that this is the case? And I don't mean 'look at this bombing and that bombing' - I mean real, clear, credible evidence that muslims are hand-in-glove with terrorism.

Anyone wearing a helmet is required to remove it before entering banks and many other premises.
In my local shopping centre (I hate the word mall) hoods are prohibited but burkhas aren't.
There have been many many instances of women in burkhas shoplifting. Probably the same per centage as people of other faiths, but it is impossible to identify them on CCTV.

Even the police say that most CCTV systems, while possibly helping to make people members of the public feel more secure, have no useful role in crime solving, simply because the quality is so poor.
