Ive just been looking at the Madeline Mccann Fund website and cant help but wonder what is so special about Madeline compared to all the other children that go missing in this world, that she gets all this publicity and has a fund of over 1 million pounds for the family to search for her?
I can guarantee that if one of my kids went missing nothing to that degree would happen to find them and i sure as heck wouldnt get over a million pound to help look for them.
I agree that everything needs to be done to find a missing child but cant help but feel annoyed by it and saddend for the familys that have had children go missing and nowhere near the help that the mccanns get.
Anyone agree?

Totally agree.
It's all driven by the press/media. because the McCanns are white, middle class, photogenic, and articulate.
The disappearance happened abroad, so the press/media can blame the 'useless foreigners ' for not finding her.
Being cynical, I wonder what's going to happen to all that money, when people start fo forget about Maddy.

Sorry I don't agree.
I agree that Madeleine is no more important than any other child that has gone missing. However the reason why there's a fund for her is that her parents have been relentless in their search and keeping this story alive in the media. Their campaigning has made sure that this little girls plight is never far from a media hungry society. I can only admire their savvy in this matter and applaud their ability to keep strong in what can only be described as every parents nightmare.
I know I'd personally fall apart of this happened to me and I'd be useless in trying to locate my child.

I agree with you Legend. Although it is more than heart breaking at the loss of a child, I am darned sure that I would NOT EVEN LEAVE MY 10 YEAR OLD to go across the road to the shop for a bottle of milk, let alone to go out to dinner with 9 friends leaving a 3 year old to babysit 2 year old twins !
I think it's because she is blonde, blue eyed and both her parents are doctors. Things like this are not supposed to happen to families like them.
It's a bit like the case of two year old Yanire Izaga, who last year was killed by her father. He had a very high powered city job, both he and his wife, (Yanire's mother) lived a jetset lifestyle, living in a million pound London apartment, both well educated with great jobs.
Yanire's father Alberto was sectioned under the mental health act for her death and he and his wife have since reconciled. I wonder had Yanire's father been a regular Joe Bloggs, would he have been dealt with so leniently. I somehow doubt it, money always talks!

I do not agree that is is because they are middle class, there are other middle class families who have had children go missing and they did not have the same media attention.
I think the reason Madeleine got so much publicity is because of her age, she was only three years old, this is unusual and it would not be considered from the beginning that she might have run away (run aways get no media attention). It also makes us feel more concerned and upset for her because she is so young. The other reason is the extremely unusual circumstances of her disappearance, they were on holiday and she was taken from her bed, with her parents and other people nearby. This has not happened before to any child from UK and i think the public were in shock about it at first. If you think about the circumstances of other missing children they are more likely than this. The vast majority of children that go missing in this country are those who runaway from home, and next it is children who are taken by a family member, often the absent parent, these get little or no media coverage.
There have been other children who have had a lot, Jessica and Holly, Millie Dowler and Shannon. But the parents did not persist with the media as much as the McCann's have. As for the fund i do not agree there should be such a thing and i believe that money should go to charities across the world to help children in need. I hope Madeleine is found safe but do not believe all that money is necessary or fair.

Linked to some other posts above, is it really wrong of me choosing where my money goes regarding charity??
I shall not say whether I have actually donated to the fund, but I would prefer to give to help a sweet little blonde, British girl born of good stock to what I still perceive decent parentage, than some war torn corrupt African nation hell bent on spending any funds on genocide or arms?

Whilst I can't agree with your sentiments- to me a child is a child is a child regardless of whether they're Muslims or not, yes you - as do we all have a say where which charities we donate to.
I know we're slowly sinking into a big brother state, but we still have a say which donations we subscribe to or not- for now anyway!
