I have decided that this year I am going abroad for Christmas. I'm going to have a week away from the cold and the turkey and the family tension. I'm thinking about the Canaries, but would love some more ideas. Not too expensive hopefully. I'm not too demanding - just a basic week of lazing about. Any suggestions gratefully received.

I for one can recommend the canaries at xmas, spent new years out there a few years ago and was still VERY warm, but a bit busy cos lots of people go there at that time of year. Other than that the caribbean's pretty good at that time of year i reckon... depending on what sort of destination you want tho (going back to the canaries) you should choose which island you want carefully. Tenerife is more commercial/clubby/young etc, fuertaventura is more coupley, less to do but more culture-ish, gran canaria's a good all-rounder and so is lanzarote, although less commercial again. Lanzarote's my favourite as there's some wicked things to do as well as bars/beaches and lazing around...
If you are looking for somewhere warm, just to laze about at not a lot of money, you should look at Sharm-el-Sheik, on the Red Sea. There are some excellent 5 star ( & I mean 5 star) hotels for 300-350 full board for the week, flying from London or Manchester (don't know prices over Xmas tho). Flight is about 5 hours. Plenty to do in the resort and some excellent snorkelling/diving if you fancy it.
I went to The Canaries for Christmas once and it was awful, dirty and noisy. I agree with Sharm though, just as near, warmer and much much nicer.
