SP, education is the same for all children who attend the same school - and I fail to see your point regarding grammar schools. They don't discriminate on the grounds of wealth, class or colour.

If you cannot afford to send your children to a grammar school/private school and you live near a badly performing comprehensive, your kids will get a poorer level of education.

I disagree with the lack of opportunity for anyone in this country. We live in meritocracy. My ex is Chinese her father came here flat broke worked hard and retired aged 42! Got bored and started another business, succeeded at that and finally retired, fair play to him.
If you raise children to value education and above all to intergrate then your child can and should achieve.
The Poles are the new ***** (pardon the terminology) but in 20 years time alot of them will own very successful businesses, whilst the ones who criticise them will still be sat on their arses moaning.
What Uganda would'nt give for the amount of businessmen they expelled in the 70s, who went on to become millionaires here.

Incidentally, parents don't pay to send their children to grammar school, and don't need to be weathy, since entrance is gained purely on the academic ability of the child.

Actually, you may be shocked to hear this, but I agree with you when you say that a poor education doesn't mean that you're destined for a life of crime.

What I'm trying to say is that if you bundle all the negative factors together (education, missing role models, poor housing, lack of opportunity etc), it's easier to go bad.

I myself had a very, very average education, but I turned out fine...chiefly because my mother promised me that if I ever got into trouble, she would kill me.

And my mother is scarier than Rambo.

Fear is a great motivator.

"A failing school" Why does it fail?The teachers have all had to pass the same exams to become a teacher in their relevant subject so that just leaves the pupils who couldn't give a damn about their futures. I left school with only 5 "O" levels but worked and studied hard to become a Government Officer, a Company director and finally ran my own business. Nobody helped me financially or otherwise.
Nowadays some would rather take the easy route and peddle drugs and steal to obtain an income. You get out what you put in!

True, however you make it sound like a recent phenomenon when in fact there has always been people taking the easy route, during WW2 they were called spivs as a example.
That said, I do agree when you say that you get out what you put in. Where I grew up there are now people I went to school with who have never worked and have no intention of ever working, I came from the same background as them and up until a couple of months ago have been working since I left school, and now am comfortable enough to work part time from home, it's down to the individual's work ethic, race, colour or creed doesn't come into it
