Postal strikes - a few things the public don't know

Because of space limitations, this will have to be on two or more posts.

As you can probably gather from my screen name I am a postman, and have been for the last 18years. Oddly enough, when I started, they not only made bags of money for themselves, they also did so for the government, and so did we as postmen - I actually earned more in 1996 than I do now! The service was better too, because it was treated as a service and most had pride in the job. I've made this post so that the public may have a better idea of what is going on about the reason for the strikes.

Now I realise that for people waiting for stuff the strike is very inconvenient, and for that we are sorry. However, over the last five years or so to us in the know the postal service has been run down and down, and it's getting worse. This is just my opinion but I reckon the government is also behind that in some way - they certainly do little to improve it, and seem content to just let the decline continue. I suspect the same regarding Post Office closures, as they are also part of the business. Given Gordon Browns comments about we should go back to work, I for one will be withdrawing the political levy from my union fees, and I daresay I won't be alone perhaps they should remember where a large part of their political fund comes from.

Anyway, this dispute is also about pensions and salary (our pension fund has had serious mismanagement for many years, making it worth less than it should, and we have not had a pay increase for nearly two years). However, it is fundamentally about changes management is determined to impose, changes which will have serious repercussions on the ordinary employees and the service. In a nutshell that could be 40,000 job losses and a job no better than being a slave at their master's beck and call for those left.

My main point was just to illustrate that there are jobs where the pay and conditions are worse than being a postie. They're not the only ones in jobs which require early starts, long hours, job insecurity, low wages etc.. (and this doesn't just apply to supermarket jobs).
I understand that, Rev.

Mr P was working for a company who was taken over by another. The rules and regulations all changed..including changes to working hours, pay negotiations, pensions and company car/allowance scheme.

As I said, he couldn't strike ~ he had the choice to get on with it or change jobs.
Well said Raggy, im still waiting to hear what the postal workers "other options" are after having their terms and conditions re-written.
But they don't have to be do they???.......

I also have some sympathy, but again not much.

Postal workers do get full pay when they are sick, they are in a final salary pension scheme, and get all the benifits of a civil servant.

The guy in the supermarket probably gets non of the above!

Look at BT they truly believed that there would be no comptition for the service they provided, how wrong wetre they. Other Companies could and probably will eventually take over the postal service. Letters will eventually become a thing of the past with e-mail being the communication method, these large Companies will be laughing all the way to the bank then with just parcel and bulky items to deliver.

Think hard and long postdog, what the world will be like in 10 years!
I fully support the strike, I work in the public sector, doing a hard stressful job that those with little conscience do in the private sector for more money and more pay. Sadly my terms and conditions are being eroded as well, and under employment law this would seem to be unfair but it doesn't stop the local authorities or the royal mail doing it.

Not everyone has a choice of just going and getting another job. Although as I'm not in a dead end job, well educated and with 2 degrees, I know I can walk into a job tomorrow if I wanted. Not everyone is as lucky.

The tories bought down the miners and the unions, which is why we are often on our knees now, how ridiculous is it that we shut down one industry, imported it cheap!! from abroad and now the price has rocketed, didn't see that coming eh.

RM will go the same way, cheap to begin with and then the prices will rocket. Lets try and keep some businesses in British hands.
