I dont feel sorry for the parents. I feel sorry for the child. Who in their right mind would leave such a young child on their own in a hotel, regardless of checking on them every 30 mins.

in minutess you could die from smoke inhalation, it takes seconds for as child to eat or drink something poisonous, seconds for them to hurt themselves, cut themselevs and bleed to death in 30 mins.

I think it's outragious. Why leave the child in the room, while you have dinner. terrible. I have no sympathy. Poor child.

A garden that is 40 yeards long is still your private place. You have your child in your home in a private place. It is still the confines of your home if you are in the garden and the child is in the bedroom. The therat is greatly diminished.

The situation in Portugal was different. The distance between the room and the tapas bar was a public area. There was a big swimming pool between the restaurant and the room.

The parents were selfish. They wanted a good time away from their children. It is far too common these days where parents see their own children as an hindrance to their enjoyment. Can you not eat with your children??
Had the children had a baby sitter ( I do not trust baby-listening services ) then that person hopefully would have heard the windows being tampered with and the crime would have been aborted!
Quite apart from the fear of abduction, a three year old and two two year olds were left alone.

The clicking of the door shutting when they checked at 9.30 could have woken one. If that one cried it could wake the other two. You then have three distressed toddlers alone for at least half an hour.

If you look at the aerial photos on the news you can see it is not the same as being at the end of a back garden.

I now understand these people are doctors. It defies belief.
Exactly Panic button sometimes children just want to know that mummy is there for comfort. I do feel sorry for the parents and "if only" but we have to think in advance these days. On this island we have to explain to parents that even paedophiles come on holiday (we had one living here but he got killed!) so don't let you guard down ever. Last week in Disneyworld they caught a paedo with a little girl. These foul, vile people are everywhere, and quite honestly you have to assume they are nearby. Take proper precautions in all things and you'll have a safe and happy holiday. I've babysat for free many a time to help poorer parents.
I understand fully that the parents must be in pieces about this situation. They must feel severe guilt.

But........
They should never have left the poor girl alone for half hour periods. You never know what sick b45tards are about these days and i wouldnt dream of leaving my daughter alone (she is also 3) at any time!
I have always lived by a rule that my ex and I came up with..... If [God forbid] anything were to happen to one of our children, how would we feel explaining it in a news conference...I know this sounds strange....bear with me! For example, my five year old were killed playing on train tracks....Bad parent. My ten year old abducted playing in the street.... would I be to blame? In my eyes no, a child of that age should be able to play outside. The parents of this child made a decision and they have to live with the consequences. I for one do not judge them for their decision as I don't imagine for one minute that they would have purposely put their daughter at risk.
Honestly, I give up - I feel so sorry for the parents - and I'm afraid I don't blame them at all.

With hindsight, it was a mistake, but I don't feel that they are to blame at all.
Let's all hope and pray that she returned to her family soon and as unharmed as possible. Hopefully it is a kind, but misguided person who wants a child, and she will be safe.
And that, vic, is the most frightening thing of all - that you and people like you don't see it as a problem to leave young children alone in a strange place. Are you really saying you honestly believe it's no different from leaving a child asleep in its own room while you're elsewhere on your own property? Sorry, but the parents are to blame, pure and simple - yes, they're paying the price now, but their beautiful daughter is paying a far higher price for their selfishness.
I`d hate to be in their position but it is bad parenting

I wouldn`t be suprised if they left them in the kidsclub everyday too while they enjoyed their holiday
Hmmm, i have read a lot of comments on here about who is to blame, etc, etc. I think everyone plays a part in the blame as its society's fault that 'sick' people are left to roam around.
All you people out there are to balme for the way this world is becoming. You all vote and support all these do-gooders/friends of the earth/human rights idiots.
Its about time the world realised that certain people cant be rehabilitated.
When i get in power i will have one 'prison' island where certain public nuisances/threats are all shipped to. There will be no tv's or mosques or laptops. Just one rule whilst in there.
My time will come...
Rock on Mr Benn I actually don't vote, and do not have the right to vote over here as I am a immigrant (albeit legal). From a distance I can see how awful the world is with all this PC nonsense, and though legally it may be on this island, it get ignored and victims still have rights, i.e if I bashed an intruder and broke his arm, the police would ignore it. but for how long will this state last? Yes it all needs shaking up and normality and common sense restored
Oneeyedvic, as has already been pointed out, if the parents hadn't left the child in the room alone this would not have happened. This, as they say, is the bottom line.

Having said that, I don't believe that this is the time to castigate the parents - they must be going through hell. It should all come out in the wash after, hopefully, reaching a happy conclusion and then people can criticise.
I thought about a prison island before, kinda sounds alright but they would have ways of getting innocent children in to the island.

I think people are missing the point, noone is blaming the parents for what happened. They are pointing out their bad judgement and in their professions you would think they would know better.

If their kids had burned to death in a fire whilst they were sat in a restaurant so far away, would you still say they werent irresponsible.

Not one person has said its their fault.
Hmmm, mike as i have pointed out also, if the guy that did this hadnt been in the public in the first place, this wouldnt have happened either (root cause).
My guess is the police know who has done this and are trying to locate him. All this 'let them back in the community' and see how they behave crap is pathetic. It will turn out that the guy is well known to the police...
I think the parents were very mistaken to leave their child in a room for reasons other people have mentioned such as a child waking up, but surely the bottom line is someone abducted the child, it is that person who is responsible.
If blame is to be apportioned it should be with that person.

I feel deep sympathy for the parents who made an error of judgment and seem to be having to pay with what must be any parents nightmare

MrBen, couldn't agree more with your comments, but I don't think that they are really in sinc with the spirit of this thread.

You'll have all the yoghurt-knitting, tree-hugging do-gooders on your case very shortly!!!!!
Put it this way, if all your money stolen from an unlocked bank, which had a guard checking every 30 mins, you would blame the bank for leaving it unlocked in the first place. Of course the criminals are guilty but the bank enabled them to commit the crime.
As a parent I cant imagine what these people are going through........but I still cant believe that they left her with two other young children on their own while they went out to eat. Irrespective of whether or not they were checking on them, they were thinking of themselves rather than the children when they decided to leave them, and poor Maddie is suffering for it. If they were so desperate to go out for a meal without the children, why did they not use the baby sitting service that was provided on the complex?
Very good point Netibiza! Give the girl some stars
