Is it illegal to trim down the size of L plates as its too big to stick anywhere neatly on my scooter?

I think you will find its illegal they where made that size for a reason.

Yes it is illegal and you could be awarded points on your licence. The usual procedure is to make and fit a bracket to take the L plate.
The relevant Regulation states the L-plate must be
7 inches x 7 inches and gives the relevant dimensions of the letter L or D. It says, "Red letter on white ground. The corners of the ground can be rounded off." but it doesn't say how round the corners can be so that suggests you could take quite a bit off the corners and it would still be legal.
