UK-- A pub has been criticised for selling a dish called 'Barrymore Pie - Faggots swimming in gravy'.

The name refers to the death of Stuart Lubbock, found drowned in the pool at Michael Barrymore's home in 2001, reports the Mirror.

Landlord Peter Towler says he will not bow to complaints from people offended.

He insisted: "These people say this is not funny but their behaviour is turning it into a joke. I am sorry that they are upset but I will not be bullied.

"I will not bow to this pressure. I sell about 100 Barrymore Pies a week. I suppose I could change its name to Politically Correct Pie."

The dish is on the menu with Wham, Bam, Thank You Lamb and Henpecked Chicken pie at Mad O'Rourkes in Tipton, West Midlands.

Customer Karina Thompson said: "I was appalled. It's a cheap joke, not funny, with offensive language. Faggot is a pejorative term for a gay man. I've written to complain."

And Outrage! campaigner Peter Tatchell said: "It's a joke in bad taste."

Even if it was just serving faggots mash peas and gravy?
How would you feel if they served "run and black" as "rum with ni**er ".

Hardly acceptable is it? (well okay some people will find it funny)

Faggot is a similarly derogatory word and they are also making fun of someone's death.

I did smirk (not belly laugh) when I saw it, but I would never eat somewhere that thought it was funny as that poor lad was someones son.

If I see the word faggot my immediate thought is of a meatball. I wouldnt not eat somewhere that serves them just because some twits choose to abuse the word.
OK Jump79. Does that mean that you are disgusted every time you see 'fruit' on a menu. And I suppose it goes without saying that you never eat fudge. Your response is pathetic. Do you really mean that you wouldn't eat something because its centuries old name had been hijacked as a nickname for uphill sausage jockeys. Woops, that rules sausages out then.
I see we managed to get eight posts before someone mentioned, rather inevitably and sadly predictably, the H word.

How is this even remotely homophobic? Do you understand what a phobia is?

It is also interesting to see that people like jenstar have got upset because of the supposed insult using the word faggot because Barrymore is a gay man - surely, if the likes of jenstar are going to be upset, they should be upset because somebody died at Barrymore's house (or, as I suspect, are they so wrapped-up in wishing to appear sympathetic to the gay community that they value somebodies right not to be referred to as a faggot over that of a life).

Barrymore, as sleazy as he is, is still alive and earning money - Lubbock is dead. Save your sympathy for Lubbock's family, not a complete tit like Barrymore.
flip-flop

Okay...let's stop using the word 'homophobics' and instead cut to the chase: 'gayhaters' is a more accurate, isn't it?
I'm sorry sp, I just dont' see it - I'm not trying to be awkward or contrary or argumentative just for the sake of it, I just genuinely don't see how the name of the pie or the landlord is homophobic or gayhating.

What I do find interesting is that the likes of Karina Thompson and jenstar appear to find the use of the word faggot more offensive than a man dying.

Don't you find that really odd?

sp1814 ~ are you going out of your way to make inflammatory remarks? I am neither a 'gayhater' nor a homophobe, yet I still happen to think that the landlord has a right to express his humour. We don't yet live in a police state run by a militiant 'pink power', thank god. The vast majority of people are heterosexual, and they don't like, and certainly don't deserve, to have radical gay rights activists hounding them for smirking at what amounts to a schoolboy joke. Hammer Head has made a very good point. why should a vocal minority be forcing the general populace into extreme pc language?
Personally I don't care if these blokes go around 'cottaging', 'fisting', and enjoying 'same sex' pleasures. Just as long as they don't expect me to want to watch or participate. You can go and join in if you like, that's your right, just as it's mine to find the practice distasteful.
Question Author
arghhh.... I think we can all say that we agree the word faggot is fine when its referring to a meatball when its used as a joke on a menu to refer to a poor guy who drowned in a pool, its not!!

If my son died and I found a pub was mocking his death as a publicity stunt I would be effing horrified.
Question Author
Oh and as for sp1814, he maybe far more PC and tolerant than anyone else on this board and I really admire him for it. I never see him belittling people or causing offense, I think he tries to take people as he finds them, if only everyone could do that, it would be a nicer place.
Hammerhead, the only way I have heard anyone ever use that word is in a derogatory manner, not as 'meatballs' (ever), not where I live anyway.
I will probably never get used to it so yes, that word still disgusts me, live with it.
Jump ~ So you've never seen Brains faggots in the freezer section of your supermarket? Where do you live ~ the moon?

Goodsoul ~ you are deluded. You only have to look at the last posting having a dig at flip-flop to see that sp is far from tolerant of other people's views. In fact I'd go so far as to say narrow minded, self important and self righteous.

flip-flop ~ good point! It is frightning to think that the anally retentive pc brigade regard name calling as more appalling than a man's death.

What the loonies seem to forget is that however much they may wish everyone to be a slack jawed, dull eyed conformist, sucking up to every minority that feels slighted or deprived or under priviledged, there will always be dissidents.
Question Author
jump79...my friend from Lanacshire didnt know what a faggot was till she moved down here. I thought it was bizarre but seems she isnt isolated.
Question Author
also Samuel I dont think that because someone speaks up for the minority groups makes them intolerant.
I have never eaten a brain before so no, never heard of that term. And when I see a meatball, I call it a meatball, and as far as (I thought!) I knew, so did everyone else?
I dont know about anyone else, but if I saw it on the menu it would put me off eating for a day or two, I like the word 'meatball' much better, thankyou
PS- samuel, I cant believe you eat brains, (how gross) I wont be able to eat for 4 days now
Jump - you must be more stupid than you originally appeared. Brains is the make of the faggots. I'll say it again, faggots, faggots, faggots and especially for the intolerant sp1814, FAGGOTS.
Well I suppose the way to think of it is, if it was your son or loved one that had died, would you find it funny ? I think not.
That's exactly the point I was trying to make lady_p_gold. People are more upset because the word faggot has been used than they are about a young man losing his life in (it has to be said) rather iffy circumstances at Barrymore's house.

I know I'm repeating myself, but I just find that really really bizarre.
er... Rather missing the point, Loosehead.

It seems perfectly obvious that the term 'faggot' in it's perjorative sense is being applied to Mr Lubbock as well as Barrymore and the offensiveness of the name is directly related to the fact that it's being explicitly linked to the poor sod's death.
