Following the recent introduction of healthy dinners in some schools only 40% of pupils are actually eating it and going down the chippy instead so a huge amount of food is wasted. It dont give a toss about their health if they are so damn ignorant, but think of all those starving people around the world that would do anything to get their hands on something to eat.

children don't always know what is best for them (hence the need for education) why not just ban them from leaving the school grounds at lunchtime.
Just to add to admarlow, its also the parents reponsibility, if they don't have enough money to buy outside the school, than they'll have to eat in school,

In this matter, the childrens wishes come second, their health first.

Actually, yes it was. My parents gave me proper food when I was a child. I was encouraged to try many and varied foods, something I have successfully done with my own children.

The fault mainly lies with the parents. They feed their children on a continuous diet of junk food so the children wouldn't know healthy food if they saw it.

Trying to get some of these children off the junk and on to healthier food is actually similar to weaning an addict of drugs.
At my son's school, the children have a set meal every day. ie, no packed lunches and no leaving the premises. The meals are paid for by parents in advance of the school term. (It is a private school) Although the menu is not exactly fantastic health wise, as a parent it is my job to ensure that he has a healthy breakfast and a nourishing dinner. When he is at school, I really cannot control what goes in his mouth but I can at other times. (Junior school) The school is also fanatical about exercise! There are sports and/or PE everyday, plus various football, hockey teams. To be completely honest, in a school of 120 pupils, I cannot remember ever seeing a porky child and he has been there 5 yrs so far.
I watched Jamie Olivers programme this week one mother was asked why her child had a packed lunch, she said "its rice or pasta every day" there was no answer as the programme cut to something else, but the question remains why no jacket potatoes or boiled potatoes.

One pasta dish they showed looked like a bowl of vomit I would refuse to eat that if it had been served to me.

Many many years ago food didn't contain all the chemicals it does now, only this week tests have shown how healthy foods, tuna, salmon, brown bread, olive oil etc were contaminated, yes they maybe in safe amounts but what is the accumulative effect, what happens if the tuna and olive oil both used in one dish are both contaminated are you still in the safe zone?
Nothing will be done about these chemicals unless the public causes a fuss as too much money is invested in their production. Remove chemicals from food and other products like make-up and cleaning products and health will improve.
