It stands for 'adult-orientated-rock', a catch-all label used by American radio stations that play fairly smooth safe music - Eagles / Fleetwood Mac / Heart - and similar.

I've also seen it explained as "American-Orientated-Rock". Whatever it stands for, that genre is superb!

I've also heard it stand for 'album-orientated rock', ie bands who are more concerned with albums than putting out singles every five minutes.
