Where did the saying 'third time lucky' come from and has anyone believed or found it to be true?

Not in my experience.I guess it just came about because of coincidence that is all.If I do not get what I want after two attemps then I find I do not get it on my third attempt.

I think that when people used to be sentenced to hanging, if you survived 3 attempts to hang you then you were free to go.
