Implications of partner moving into my house?

I bought my house 18 months ago and was happily living alone. Now I've got a partner and would like him to move in. Obviously when he moves in he will be paying half the mortgage and bills, however his name will not go on the mortgage.

I have some reservations about this arrangement however, as I have heard horror stories about couples splitting up after a couple of years and them having to sell the house and split everything in half regardless of how much the person without their name on the mortgage has contributed.

Are my fears justified? How long could we live together before he would be entitled to half the house?
