It should be illegal to sell dogs full stop, it should be illegal to breed them, full stop. If you want a dog adopt one at a rescue centre for a donation. I just despair at this cruelty for profit. Bang the savages up for 5 years a piece. disgusting. Rant over.

Breeding them to sell for profit is the problem. That trade should be made illegal. At its worse it favours mutilation, unsuitable cross breeding and the creation of dogs as fashion accessories, all of which should stop. Dogs will not become extinct because puppy farms are closed, because dogs breed naturally.

" it should be illegal to breed them, full stop"

a lot of dig breeds would go extinct then
Question Author
there's no shortage of dogs.
think about it... if you stopped allowing people to breed dogs... what do you think might happen to those dog breeds...
I'm not a doggy person but I believe in freedom.
Do we not have laws against cruelty to dogs/animals?
Question Author
all dogs are mongrels anyway, they all started out from the same genes and there are millions of them. There may be a case for allowing breeding by licenced dog charities in the future if some breeds get close to extinction but for the here and now we need to stop the breeders like the ones in the link creating puppy factories to sell to the plonkers that buy them for thousands.
Question Author
spice: "Do we not have laws against cruelty to dogs/animals? " - yes but the penalties are meagre and rarely dished out anyway.
//there's no shortage of dogs. //

There was during lockdown. The rescue centres were virtually empty.

How many dogs with clipped ears are selt each year in the UK?
It’s not just clipped ears. Some dogs are bred to achieve a particular look regardless of the health problems and misery this causes the dog. That is cruelty yet legal

barry, it's the whole "industry" clipping the ears is just what brought my attention to it. The whole thing is rotten, there is cruelty from top to bottom. Err indoors works with some eejit who's just paid one of these charlatans over £2k for a French bulldog! These breeders care only about the dosh. The female dog (the correct term will get censored) is just a puppy factory continually pregnant for the years she can be, disgusting.
Question Author
bang on gromit, at least one thing we can agree on.
It should be Licensed Breeders ONLY for breeds in danger of going extinct. I have signed lord knows how many government petitions for this.
TTT I share your anger and some, at the cruelty to those poor creatures.
I have had about 9 dogs in my lifetime, all rescues. And all lovely.
Question Author
I don't even trust the "licensed" breeders, it's too lucrative, there should be a proper system set up for breeding certain breeds if and when need with proper controls and max prices set. Only the dog charities should be doing it, no private people at all I don't care how much of a dog lover they claim to be.
And what happens when the female dog can no longer breed TTT? Yep, curtains.
Question Author
sadly LB that's true for many of them.
I would gladly see some breeds go extinct, the unhealthy deformed breeds
I agree with you 100% TTT and this has always been a bugbear of mine. Hundreds and hundreds of dogs waiting to be rescued in rescue centres throughout the country and yet breeders go on breeding more and more !! Now they mix two pedigrees together and call them names like 'cockerpoos' and you see them everywhere. Not the poor dogs fault of course. All my dogs and my parents before me have been rescues and I'm very proud of that. Sadly, mankind will always be cruel to animals which is why we need so many animal charities and rescue centres and thank God for them I say.
I agree that unnecessary operations, mutilation, puppy farms should be banned. I don't agree that dogs should never be bred from, or only from licensed breeders. But that there should be a limit. Which, I think there is. Cruelty is never a reason to punish normal people. That's completely unacceptable by any standards.
Pixie, what do you mean ‘cruelty is never a reason to punish normal people’?
