We all like the hospital but any one of us taking advantage of it - or the schools and colleges and art galleries similarly funded by what in this day and age are rightly deemed unacceptable means - is benefitting from the spoils of slavery. History is history. Hiding or destroying statues doesn't change that.

Exactly the opposite. I'm listening to what everyone else thinks... I'm white, so wouldn't understand it myself, but it isn't all about me. If other people are finding it inappropriate, offensive, outdated, why not listen?

I knew you would say that, naomi, with no real reason given.... but sometimes, society just doesn't listen. It is still ruled by those who hate change and feel threatened by "others". There is a lot of living in the past on this site in general, and while history may be important (and can't be changed, no matter what). At some point, we need to think about future generations too.

If someone good works go on for so many years beyond the bad things they did there must come a point where we should accept the good outweighs the bad. The lives saved are so many more than those destroyed. An honest memorial that explains the past but acknowledges that everyone is working to ensure that the good will grow for everyone.
